What exactly does Pdx have to lose from an open beta, I wonder?

Too much feedback and the need to have many people managing all the beta testers. I would say less than 3% of people who 'test' my mods give any kind of feedback. So I would believe only 5% of open beta testers would report anything. And all of the Open Beta tester quitting & giving up on the game or reporting on all the problems and giving HOI IV a bad name before it is released. That could still mean 100's of people reporting (often unclear reports) and the need to fallow all of them. I have done paid Q.A. work and one of things they wanted the most was a clear concise report.

I guess maybe you could pass a little test or something, or be compelled by agreement to give some sort of feedback? I agree that it might take a lot of work to get any useful information out of though.

Well, now you are describing a closed Beta. Some closed Betas might just have 2-5 people & you must test at there location and others there a 100's of people & you download it & test at home at your own time. I think Paradox's will be more like the second type.

I've never quite understood open beta. First of all, you give your game for everyone to play for free. Maybe they won't buy it because they have played it enough in beta or because the game was still too unpolished and they didn't start to like it because of that.

Second, what's the difference between rushed release and open beta? If no one wants to play an unfinished buggy release, then why would the same people want to play an unfinished buggy beta?

Yeah, closed Beta all the way. Proper Beta testing is a bit like a chore. Whereas I think many just do it to try an play a Demo.

I did it once and it ruined the feel of a new release for me- so wouldn't do it again and have much gratitude to those that do and contribute to games that I enjoy.


That said- Paradox could have an excellent and sizable Beta pool of people by now that would really add huge QA and quality feed back.

I'd hate 2,800,000 because in some countries (Finland) that means 2.8
2 800 000 would be the best in my opinion, no one should have a problem with it.

It's easy to write code which uses the regional settings on your PC for number/date/time formats. They are using "2.8M". My guess is that would be understandable to everyone, but it's not hard to replace the decimal point with a comma for those who prefer it that way, if it was an issue in some locales?

2.8M is probably the best. It's short and gives you clear information how many people you're looking at.
