:D Hey I decided to take up EU2 again to remember what it was, but found myself completely confused as though I never played the game  even though I spent many hours and contributed to this forum before

Now can you help me out a bit.. First thing to ask - is there a complete map mod? And what other mods are essential to enhance the experience?

And maybe some reference for the basic guidelines of the game to refresh my memory :D

Thanks!

Agceep is the premeir mod.

There are many mods- WATK is the only one I can think of right now. :eek:o

And the wiki and tutorial ingame will answer most of your questions. ;)

The most popular mapmods are MyMap and WatK. They are both "finished" as in not having any more development (that I know of). But the latter of the two have gotten two "sons" in form of WatKabAoI by cool-toxic and AGCEEP on WatK by szmik. The former is a reworking of the map itself, while the other is a combination of the WatK map and AGCEEP.

AGCEEP is the most popular scenario-event-mod, developed by the AGCEEP High Council. Interregnum by MattyG is the second-largest, but with a completely different setup/goal. Age of Imperialism by Hive, the newer Age of Europa by Wenceslaus II, Rome Universalis by Molleby and KaRei and many many more are all available for download in the Mod subforum.

Personally, I like AGCEEP for Singleplayer use, and it is mainly designed to provide a historical feeling, with lots and lots of events leading certain historically important nations in their designed course, with certain exceptions. For Multiplayer, I'd suggest WatK map with no additional mods on top.

As for general gameplay advice, there's plenty of it. Research Trade and Infra early, then go for Land 9. Force-vassal and diplo-annex for conquests to save badboy. Use lots of cavalry early game, especially on plains. Trade in non-competitive CoTs to maximize profits.

Ask more specific questions, and there will be more specific answers :D

Very hard. Only two map mods have been released (WATK and MyMap, and WATKABAOI, which is an update to WATK); the AGCEEP map has been in progress for several years.

Inferis's site has the tools, if you're brave enough to try them. ;)

The others are right in that AGCEEP (and interregnum) is the mod for singleplayer.

But be advised that if you play a country what was on downhill in the EU2 period, you MUST read the event files. Otherwise you will be reduced in size be events, which is NOT fun.
(typical examples are Hungary, Timurids, Golden Horde... With countries like this, you must plan your game before it starts!)

Bleh!

More AGCEEP propaganda! Vade retro! Blasphemers! :p
(mmhh, after that little speech with MattyG i am tempted to ask you guys for "genuine research" to prove that AGCEEP is the "premier mod" around, heh)

If you want a real challenge, and a real AI (no matter how good the other mods are, their AI is always too dumb), try Europe Portugalis.

If you, on the other hand, want extremely (and i really mean it!) historical events, go with AGCEEP.

There are also plenty of other mods around. The MES was actually good back in the old days. I also remember playing some roman-mod one or more years ago and it wasnt bad either. ExtraWatk and Watkaboi are also good picks if you are tired of the old eu2 map just like me. MyMap as well, although, AFAIK, something hapened to agung and the mod hasnt been officially updated for almost 2 years.

Well, there is "proof". AGCEEP and Interregnum got their own subforums. AGCEEP's one got over 120.000 posts in it. That's half of the total amount of posts in the whole "Scenarios and mods"-forum. Also, I think Yoda keeps some statistic of how many downloads there are from the website. Oh, and just having a website dedicated to the mod also shines above other ones.

I'd say there's plenty of reason to call AGCEEP the most popular/biggest mod of EU2.

(yes, I know you weren't serious in your "request" ;))

Lol, so you consider spam actually a proof? I dont. (and what is not spam, just shows that: the mod is not finished, needs improvement or that it is buggy). It is just like saying EU3 is better then EU2 because it got a bigger post ratio (EU3 is relatively new and already got half EU2's posts, notably with outright spam everywhere).

And while other mods got only a thread for people to speak about and discuss it, AGCEEP got countless others.

So you see - post count barely means anything. I have played more EP then any other mod, and i got only 2 posts in there if memory serves. And got by far more then that in the AGCEEP forum, a mod, that i barely play.

I won't say proof but indicator(s).

Of course, I have number of downloads: more than 3,500 downloads for each version. And I say downloads, not players. I don't know what people do after downloading.

Of course, number of posts in a subforum is just an indicator but it is hard to say there is spamming in AGCEEP subforum. This is open discussion over something that will never be finished. There is always some stuff to add, enhance or modify. And Bugs threads are also an indicator of the players' feedback... and life.

Now, now, I said "proof", not proof. The quotation marks does some difference after all. In lack of a more appropriate word at the time, they were added, and I am sure that you, as well as me, being non-native English speakers, quite understand the need for such details.

(and what is not spam, just shows that: the mod is not finished, needs improvement or that it is buggy). It is just like saying EU3 is better then EU2 because it got a bigger post ratio (EU3 is relatively new and already got half EU2's posts, notably with outright spam everywhere).
I never did say any mod was better than the other. I said it was "popular" and "big", but never put any value in it. And your parallel works for this case, as EU3 indeed is both more popular and bigger than EU2. I also said that it "shines above all others", and I stand for that. If you ask 100 persons to name an EU2 mod, I wouldn't be surprised to have AGCEEP being mentioned most of the time, even if the 100 were as educated as you and me in the diversity of EU2 mods.

As should always be added as a caveat, this real AI is due in no small part to events that will have the AI declare war on specific dates, every game. :p

And events with AI goodies as well, like say, giving holland 100 warships off the hat. ;)

But as i said before - its a necessary evil. How else would you possibly make the AI do something, with only AI files? Even AGCEEP gave "AI event goodies" to Spain for colonization purposes... didnt it?

A little mod-war here eh :D Anyway I got AGCEEP and played a little, just enough to remember that EU was supposed to work after a historical pattern. And that's when I realized how much I love CK :D

I did spend much time years ago on this game but now It looks so cartoony it's not even funny, and I had forgotten how the AI worked and had to be "helped" a lot to do anything decent.

Seriously now thanks for all the replies, I saw the map-editing is a nightmare to do, but the map being made currently for some roman mod seems impressive, I hope that gets finished.

We had proof that some events that were designed for players and AI were in fact interesting only for AI and modified them accordingly. ;)

Anyway, we help AI when there is no other solution but this is the end of the process when no other solution was successful. For example, AI never build fortresses in colonies by itself. Better force it.

Forced wars are another story and more factors are involved, especially context. It can end in weird results. We avoid them as much as possible but it is a fact this is not the easiest path because we try to give the right conditions for conflicts, not force them. Napoleonic France is the best example of the limits but these limits are also the limits of the engine itself and behaviour of big AI counries.
