War in the East – Knocking on Stalin’s Door
Even though the Vologda Operation was officially completed, fighting has not stopped. The Soviets continued threatening Belozersk. Pre-emptive attacks were made by Lithuanian 5th Pestininku Korpusas towards Kaduy and later towards Lipin Bor but all of them failed. Exhausted divisions of the 5th PK were caught off guard by a sudden Soviet counter-attack at Belozersk and had to retreat from the town. Only the timely arrival of fresh reinforcements saved the day.
In order to secure the flow of supplies to Vologda in the case of Belozersk loss, the 3rd PK took Cherepovets, north of Belozersk.
In the South, the main fighting shifted towards Stalingrad Region. During the first days of 1943, Lithuanians won at Kuznetsovsky and Naumovskiy, and on 9 January 1943 won at Proletarsk pushing more Soviet troops behind Don preventing them from organising successful counter-attacks.
The leading elements of the 2nd PK continued advance towards Stalingrad. On 3 January 1943, the Battle of Salskiyk was won opening the direct road to Stalingrad. Further battles were won on the left bank of Don at Popov and Verkhnechirskiy. On 15 January 1943, the 221st Infanterie motorised division reached suburbs of Stalingrad but an attack on the city was postponed until the arrival of reinforcements.
Situation at Stalingrad:
At the same time, the elements of the 2 Armija took Tbilisi on 6 January 1943 and continued moving towards Baki and Groznyj.
Due to the critical situation in Stalingrad region, the Soviets had to weaken their positions in German and Romanian sectors. Germans seized the opportunity and took Rjazan. Romanians also made some limited gains.
British submarines intercepted Lithuanian convoy to Batumi in the North Sea. Lithuanian divisions in Caucasus lost highly needed supplies which slowed their advance.
British also achieved another success in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia joined the Allies and exacerbated Italian position in the region.
In the Middle East, Persians re-captured Ahwaz, but Italian mariners captured Behbahan and Bushehr.
The situation in the Far East became critical. After months of stalemate, Americans received fresh reinforcements and supplies and broke out of Kyushu Island. They unexpectedly took Hiroshima and annihilated Japanese defenders in Southern Japan leaving no Japanese units capable to defend the road to Tokyo. The exhausting two front war in Manchuria crippled Japan’s capability to fight Americans.
