I load up my game and here's what I see.

f.PNG

High Tensions - There's no player agency to deal with this besides canceling the colony and losing all progress. So why even tell me?

States in Turmoil - As far as I know, there's no player agency to deal with turmoil on an individual state level besides decreeing violent suppression. The only time I ever care about turmoil is if I want to build something faster in a state, in which case I'm checking it anyway, not because the notification window told me. This notification would be more useful if it said "Your construction is being slowed by turmoil in these states" instead of "turmoil exists".

Unused Construction - This one is useful except it's bugged in the beta and is always on.

Available Decisions - It's just a bunch of expeditions for a prestige reward I don't care about.

Contested Government - In every playthrough, the government is contested or unacceptable 99% of the time. I don't need a notification about it.

Can Declare More Interests - No I can't, I already declared interest on the entire world. I shouldn't still be seeing this.

Expensive Man-o-Wars - One of my puppets is still using Man-o-Wars in 1890. I could not possibly care less.

The devs did a really good job curbing or allowing to be curbed toast and notification spam in the latest patch, but the situation window is still a sore point with me. Just my two cents as a casual player who's probably not very good at the game.

Agree that panel has way too much junk in it. Worse is when you dismiss them and they keep coming back over and over and over and over again.

You CAN remove the button by modding, which is what I did.
1.2.2 already does a much better job at delivering important information to the player which in turn makes this feature even worse, the only thing I use it for on the Beta is to check states with insufficient taxation capacity and it seems like i wont even need to do that anymore in 1.2.3.

You wait until some others get their way and they are all displayed as a little line of yellow flags right across the top of your screen! :D
More seriously, one of the UI devs acknowledged there is work to do on the notification, so I expect it will get an overhaul at some point.

States in Turmoil - As far as I know, there's no player agency to deal with turmoil on an individual state level besides decreeing violent suppression.
There is, in the sense that you can build buildings to employ pops to raise SoL to reduce radicalism.

In this sense the reduced construction speed introduced is kind of brutal though, since your only way of reducing turmoil long-term is reduced or even negated just by having a problem to solve with it in the first place. But strictly speaking, this is a state-scope action which can reduce turmoil!

High Tensions - There's no player agency to deal with this besides canceling the colony and losing all progress. So why even tell me?
Pause your colony, allowing tensions to decline.
This is fundamentally untrue. Having a way to see states with active turmoil penalties means you can diagnose underlying national issues, comparing (for instance) recent conquest Radicals to discrimination or low SoL issues. While yes, you can't push a button to reduce Turmoil directly, that's because Radicals creating Turmoil is an outgrowth of play.
Unused Construction - This one is useful except it's bugged in the beta and is always on.
Yep, bugs need squishing.
Available Decisions - It's just a bunch of expeditions for a prestige reward I don't care about.
Yeah, this is a fair one, but the solution isn't to remove the notification but to import the "mark decision as important" option of EUIV, I:R, and CK2/3 so it will stop telling you about irrelevancies.
Contested Government - In every playthrough, the government is contested or unacceptable 99% of the time. I don't need a notification about it.
Maybe it's the 1.2 beta, but I've not found it impossible to manage decent legitimacy.
Can Declare More Interests - No I can't, I already declared interest on the entire world. I shouldn't still be seeing this.
This one is completely fair - "you can do a thing" indicators when you have spare points but nothing left to spend them on is an infuriating feature. Again, though, note that the issue is the specific case where the notification fails, not that the notification is worthless in its entirety.
Expensive Man-o-Wars - One of my puppets is still using Man-o-Wars in 1890. I could not possibly care less.
This is a corollary to the "Available Decisions" issue - having the notification is good, but there are cases where its presence is no longer informative.

I think this should only show up if you have fewer than a dozen or so declared interests. The goal of declared interests was to state you're specifically focused on certain parts of the world, yet naval bases allow you to accumulate a ton of declared interests as a large country. By the time I'm placing my 31st declared interest in Central Asia, it's more to make the alert go away than it is signaling any kind of strategic interest (outside of a world conquest game) and as a consequence I have to filter out more diplomatic plays. Having an undeclared interest when you only have two or five available is a much bigger deal.

I fully agree with OP here, and doing some serious cleaning in the Current Situation panel is very high on my personal priority list.
There are two and only two types of items hidden in Current Situations: (1) Important notices that we should be able to see and identify at a glance, without constantly and repeatedly having to open and scroll around in a glowing orange menu button, and (2) Useless notices that we don't need to ever see. Take the valuables out of the box, throw out the trash that remains in the box, and then throw out the box.

I think this could be useful if it displays the actual number, just like the tax capacity deficit. For now, I agree that it's basically useless

But this problem seems like it would be better solved by looking at a turmoil map mode and not by a notification listing 50+ states in your vast empire, no?

Yeah, this is a fair one, but the solution isn't to remove the notification but to import the "mark decision as important" option

I agree, and fully admit I'm nitpicking on a few of these that are useful at times, just not the times I screenshotted. For example I love knowing Iron or Coal is expensive in my country, or that I can declare a new interest in an adjacent region. Like you said, there just needs to be more nuance, and perhaps player agency in selecting goods/decisions that are important to them.

I fully agree with OP here, and doing some serious cleaning in the Current Situation panel is very high on my personal priority list.

You're the man!

Pause your colony, allowing tensions to decline.

I'm going to betray my noobishness here but I actually had no idea you could do that. I searched the ui for a good 3-4 minutes before I finally found the little pause button on the state overview screen. Thanks for the suggestion :D It might be helpful for players if that feature was a little more obvious.

  • Mount & Blade: Warband
I'm going to betray my noobishness here but I actually had no idea you could do that. I searched the ui for a good 3-4 minutes before I finally found the little pause button on the state overview screen. Thanks for the suggestion :D It might be helpful for players if that feature was a little more obvious.

Wait until it is objectively better in every possible regard? Sounds good. You do realise that the system you are mocking allows you to remove those notifications with a right click, yes?
Provided they follow the EU4 model by grouping similar items under one alert and a soft priority sort and not the Stellaris model of everything gets a unique alert that we will sort by when the alert was received.

Yeah I'm almost certain EU4 was the game being referenced in Lord Canterbury's mocking post.
