Hey guys,
Avid multiplayer player here. I don't know how many of you have tried to play a MP game, but the lobby is vastly inadequite compared to any other multiplayer RTS. The sad part is, as for 4x games the multiplayer is very adequite. However, there are a bunch of QoL improvements that shouldn't be very hard to impliment that would go a long way to making it a more enjoyable experience.
First off, lets talk server settings. There needs to be limitted consoie access so the host. And a few commands need to be exposed to the host, that can be issued from the console. Specifically, setting the server name, and setting/changing/removing a password.
Often people will drop from a MP game, and a host will want to take some hotjoiners so the game can continue. Being able to changing the server name/description would help players identify these games.
Setting a password from the console, is a way to tell people hotjoiners are no longer welcome.
Secondly, there is no way to tell that a MP game is in the lobby. Most people want to bring their own race, not use a randomly generated race. Rolling a random race is fun, but its not the same as designing your own. Currently there is no way to tell that a server is in the lobby waiting for players. What I propose is adding a third server status. So it would be lobby, starting, and running.
And last but not least, chat messages need to appear somewhere on the screen while the chat window is minimized and then fade away. Also when the hotkey for the chat window is pressed, you can't type right away, you have to click in the text box to get the cursor there... which defeats the purpose of the hotkey...
A few hours of QoL fixes for MP are sorely needed, up until it's actually time for MP to get the love it deserves. It's playable now, but minor annoyances make you want to claw your eyes out and feed them to your cat.
