Oppression is a bit of a controversy here. Assimilation was possible a'la USA by giving people freedom to do as they wish and letting them adopt on their own, or a'la Russia by gradually banning other cultures and languages. The American way proved to be better, but Russianization wasn't all that unsuccesfull, especially with small minorities.
