linux: tested?

quick.
I happen to have only one computer currently so it has to be a linux machine for work. It will take time until I can make it to get me a pc for games. so,
does paradox test games on linux wine at some degree?
may we expect V2 to be something runable under wine?
is there some general official tips for winetricks or something?

So far I haven't found out how to make eu3 running on linux and I fear that v2 would not be better.

edit: this is not mentioning portability, just in case.

because they might have some feedback from other users? or being an IT company they might have a geek in-house ? or being them the developers they might know if most issues comes from certain features that could have a workaround with winetricks (ie. dotNET is a hell to install with winetricks and couldn't make it to work)?
you know, mate, asking just in case. Surely they must have more information than me.
It's unlikely that I'll get me a windows machine before the game is published and I'd not like to miss V2 for long.

I haven't heard of Paradox doing any testing in Wine. There are a few dedicated players that try to get EU3/HoI3 running in Wine, and it works (fairly) well, or so I have been told.

Check the stickied threads in the EU3 and the HoI3 General Discussion forums, and ask there. V2 uses the same engine, so their experiences might help you make an informed decision.

Oh, thanks, I don't have Hoi3 but I tried EU3 and just came up with a headache and few creative insults D). It always let me down at splash when loading sounds (so banner says).

set REG_SZ MaxShadowSize to 0


If that dosen't work, rename the sound and/or music folder.

If you're going to pay for Windows it seems like it would make a lot more sense just to dual-boot instead of buying VM software. Given the likelyhood that the game will be very resource-intensive I really don't think you want to run it in a VM anyway (especially with pixel shader support being relatively new to VMs).

Yes, all things considered, keeping Windows around via dual boot for gaming was less of a hassle for me than dealing with emulation/VM environments. I still have utmost respect for people who choose to fight that battle (on Windows compatibility).

I would like to mention that there are free (no cost) VMs for linux. But 3D performance is not something you want to play games on.

And from personal experience about wine.. It's easy if it's an openGL game. But if it's DirectX, you have to find it equally as fun to to tweak wine, as playing the game to get decent performance... Or of course be really good at wine.

In short. I'd really recommend you to have a windows something (partition or box) to play games on. And then have a linux for your real computer, thats what I've been doing
You might want to check out if there is an easy way into the MSDNAA (or whatever it is called these days).

I thought that 3D was not supported in VMware.

Any how, I had already tried the change in the registry and it wasn't working. I am not sure if I am doing it well as I have 3 different files for registry.

The renaming of the music directory didn't go well.
I tried PlayonLinux and wine with winetricks

If that's an option, it's clearly superior. I had understood his first post as this not being an option for work reasons.

No idea, really. Never tried that.

Until the last year or so I don't think any virtualization software supported 3D & pixel shaders but I believe several products now do.

I'm currently running EU3 under Ubuntu + Wine and is perfect besides the "white ships" issue.

EU:Rome was also perfect under linux

I really hope to have an even better play with Vic2

I think that perhaps i screwed the whole wine config then. I'll try a clean install and see if it goes better.
Did you change that registry thing for EU3?
