When I try to play CKII the menus load very slowly inching their way up little by little till I can use them. If I go into the steam overlay It will speed up. I'm using linux if that makes a difference

We've had a number of issues under Arch here, as you'll see if you search. But nothing like this. Very odd. Not really sure what to suggest to be honest!

No. I also just updated it but this time the steam overlay trick doesn't work
I tried it with the nouveau driver and the menu wasn't slow however nouveau can't play games at all. I'm guessing it's a problem with the nvidia propriety drivers
hum... so it's in the main menu... doubt it'll work, but try the -skiplauncher option in steam.
If it doesn't work, and you have up-to-date nvidia drivers, I don't know what you can do.

I'm also experiencing this. On Ubuntu 15.04, Gnome 3, Nvidia GTX 970, 355.06. Menu animation and the Crusader Kings 2 and Paradox logo animate in very very slow. The map zoom effect is smooth though. This can sometimes continue in other part of the game, e.g. if i press the load button before the main menu is completely visible or the very bottom of the UI is not visible in-game. Especially so in borderless mode it seems.

I see the same now. It worked fine 6months ago. Both the main menu but also the side menus that now slide in when starting games are very slow.
I've tried to disable all extensions and remove the ~/.paradoxinteractive folder but this still occurs. Anything else we can try? This worked for me before as well but I'm not entirely sure if that was before or after I replaced my machine (was a while since I played last time).
I didn't notice before but there seems to be a note about this in the Known Issues and Solutions post:

The buttons panel does not slide up from the bottom of the screen unless you alt-tab in and out repeatedly, or drag the game window around. With the FXAA setting enabled the menu does not appear automatically. To solve it override the game setting unchecking the "Enable FXAA" field and putting the antialiasing at 4x . It is worth to make a specific profile for the game to automatically use this setting once you play.
