This is my setup:

  • Ubuntu 14.10
  • i7 3770k
  • Geforce 670GTX, official drivers
  • 8GB ram

Using the lowest settings, I get fps dropping to around 10 when the simulation is running with the camera zoomed in.

I'm getting 20-25 FPS with a GTX 980.

Down to 7-8 FPS with __GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS enabled.

Same issue here: performance ok in Win7 (GTX 760, Intel Xeon E31270, 8GB RAM) but extremely slow after rebooting into Linux (official SteamOS or Gentoo - same results).
Played a bit with CPU affinity of the Cit.Skyl. processes but it didn't solve anything.

I'm also experiencing terrible performance on my system. I just started playing and got 30FPS on an empty city and haven't even bothered trying to do anything else :(

Unfortunately I experience the same performance drop from about 30 FPS down to < 10 FPS with about 2.000 people in my city. I also have these two lines in the Player.log file, as others have reported here:

Material doesn't have a texture property '_MainTex'
(Filename: /tmp/unity/Runtime/Shaders/Material.cpp Line: 1011)

Here are my specs:

I understand that the devs have loads of things to do at the moment, thus I also understand that such a fix might take some days. However, at least some feedback would be nice. Do the devs even have this bug on their radar (being that we are "only" Linux users)? I agree that Linux support was one of the main reasons for me as well for buying this great game!

I'd just like to chime in that I am getting this issue as well, with a GeForce GTX 970. Game is playable but graphics very choppy in Archlinux. I wanted to support this game specifically for choosing to target Linux. Thanks for supporting Linux, developers! Since it was working in Linux quite well until a patch before launch, I imagine it should be easy to fix. I hope so at least.

On the bright side, this thread has consistently been on the first page for a while now. There are a lot of us Linux users it seems! I doubt we're under their radar. Keep it up, everyone. (I'd still be reassuring if they said anything, though.)

I haven't experienced fps issues, however I am experiencing long initial load times and momentary freezes as new assets are loaded from disk.

Same here, with steam overlay and fps counter feature I can now see I'm getting 10~15 fps most of the time.
My system specs are well above average:
Code:

CPU: AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core Processor (6 core(s))

Gfx Shader Model: 30
Game Version: 1.0.5
Current repo drivers. Had to heavily turn down quality settings to get a playable game, funny enough, when looking into distance edges of the map I get around 30 fps.
Lets stay tuned if they find a way to solve this issue.

Made an account just to comment on this. When I boot into windows the game runs without flaw (super smooth on max settings).

Linux is unplayable (I'm not sure what FPS I'm getting but its noticeably bad) - especially when I zoom, or move the screen.

I haven't experienced fps issues, however I am experiencing long initial load times and momentary freezes as new assets are loaded from disk.

I have the same thing (but with FPS issues on top of that). Everything loads incredibly slowly. The game takes 4 minutes to load the main menu, it's awful. And it also lags for up to 30 seconds in some situations like city level ups, change of texture quality in the settings (that's partially justified) and also randomly every 30 minutes or so. Loading/exiting the game also takes 1-3 minutes.
I'm running basic ext4 on LVM, which shouldn't cause any problems since not a single other game has behaved for me like that on this machine.

I know the devs are busy celebrating the successful release and stuff, but things need to get fixed. At least a single short post from them indicating that they're not ignoring the issue would be fine for now. I also bought the game mainly because of Linux support and now I don't even want to play it because of all the problems.
Let's hope for a dev reply soon.

Totalymoo did reply on Steam forums and Reddit. Basically, they're looking for the cause, maybe expect a patch next week.

I'm pretty confident that this is an easy fix. Liam over at gamingonlinux.com was getting great performance on his first twitch stream for the game. By the next stream that performance had dropped, but it showed that the game can run very smoothly on linux.

Same here. 10fps on *lowest* settings at 1024x640 (!)

devInfo.txt
Code:
Machine ID: db99f4fb572447a6ab1318a0b55efe0e
Model: PC
OS: Linux 3.18 unknown 64bit

Gfx Version: OpenGL 4.4 [4.4.13283 Compatibility Profile Context 13.20.16]
Gfx Memory: 2646
Gfx Shader Model: 30
Game Version: 1.0.5

Getting about 10fps on lowest. This game is really unplayable on Linux currently. Running proprietary catalyst driver 12.4.

Also Cities: Skylines generates systemd coredumps. The game takes very long to load (to menu!), more than 2 minutes. Granted, it's on a regular HDD, but I doubt that's the cause. It generates 3 coredumps when launching to menu, 2 small ones (22MB), and two big ones (250MB). Loading a game stalls at slightly over half for over a minute. And behold, another coredump! (600MB in size!) is generated. Then the game finishes loading. Well not quite. It stalls again at around 90% (again for more than minute, but no coredump). All-in-all, it takes about 4 minutes to load the game, and 8 minutes to load a savegame.
