Hi everyone, I'm a new forum member really looking forward to the Stellaris release. I noticed in the Blorg YouTube vid that when it came to the customisation of the ship appearances for a race that there was only one option for each race type. It would be great if there was as much variety in the ship designs as there are in the races portraits. I think this would greatly add to the 'exploring the Unknown' feeling when you encounter alien races for the first time. I think Immersion would be lost if you met another race with identical ships.

I don't mind the current system. Because of the different looks of the sections, we'll see a quite large amount of unique ships. The only real info I will get from the visual of the ships is the phenotype of the other race.

Don't worry, after release we'll most likely get some ship dlcs similar to unit packs in their other games. Undoubtedly someone will go in and mod some ship designs also, so at least there is plenty room for expanding on it

Personally I think it would be cool if you could set your own colour scheme for the ships. That way there is tons and tons of more variety without having the model lots of new 3D models.

I think the diversion is larger then it seems. There are 6 maingroups (for now) and these groups have 4 types of ships and each type of ship has a few sets of different sections. So you can change your front-, back- or midsection etc with a few alternatives. Addtionally I've seen ships that were white/brown so you can probably change the color a bit aswell. So your ships should look a bit unique atleast even if you spawn next to 4 neighbours who all use the mammalian ship-design.

More customisation options will likely come in time with dlc/mods.

I would go further and say that is almost a necessity. If I play a particular phenotype and every empire of the same phenotype has ships that look exactly or almost exactly like mine, that is going to get old real fast. At least let me put some different color racing stripes on mine to differentiate it from every other arthropod ship out there.

Wiz and cknoor did talk about ship colors. Not in a 'definitely happening' sort of way, but it has occurred to the team.

This being a Paradox game, you can probably mod more in.

They usually let you mod everything BUT the models - it's why we don't have a lot of really good mods :( -- It's part of their revenue stream I guess..... Otherwise, why buy DLC when the same thing is available for free as a Mod.

What I WISH they would do, is allow 3D modelers to sell packs of models for say $2.50 - Steam gets $0.50, the dev gets $1 and Paradox gets $1. Paradox would QA it and make sure everything is good (kinda like an app store submission).

No, it's 30% to Steam, 45% to the people whose game is increasing in value thanks to the availability of mods, and 25% to the person who actually made the dang mod in the first place.

Thanks for all the replies, glad to see I'm not the only one who likes having variety in ship design. I understand game mechanics should take precedence before aesthetics but hope more design customisation options become available in the future if they're not available at launch. This game has so much potential, I can't wait to see what the future brings for Stellaris :)

Strip away all DLCs from both CK2 and EU4 and you would notice that most unit sprites look similar. I would expect DLCs or free updates (for the sake of expansions) that radically change things in this regard.

what i don't get is why the ship presets are named they way they are (unless they're just WIP). "mammal ships", "reptilian ships", etc... WHYYYYYY? why not something like "symmetrical ships", "organic ships", stuff like that.

They're probably the defaults for those phenotypes.
