Is there a hard cap on the # of models for any given unit?

I've long thought that the universality of ships in particular was a glaring weakness of AoD (ok, naval warfare in its entirety), and I was just wondering if it was possible to expand the # of models of ships to allow some differentiation between nations' warships.
