Gavelkind in its current form was a mistake.

Fixed. As mentioned, there is nothing inherently wrong with such an inheritance system. The glaring problem is the lack of control besides dividing up your land before you die (cos the allocation will make no sense otherwise).

I think Europe has its border gore because Charlamagne never forms E_Frankia. In about 20 CM start playthroughs I've never seen it happen. I once kept giving CM money to see if he formed the title (after he had taken saxony) and I had to give him 15000 before he did, because the first thing he did was to create loads of duchies, then kingdoms, then build castles in every empty holding in his demesne, and then finally E_Frankia.

I've seen him form it once after about the same amount of CM starts. I think it was only because he was way over his vassal limit after taking Middle Francia and Saxony. Has anyone ever seen him take Italy and form the HRE? I keep hoping for it to happen whenever I do a 769 start but he never does.

Also here's from an old save I had that started in 769. Four centuries and France and Italy couldn't sort themselves out.

Meanwhile, after changing hands from the Abbasids to the Hashimids and having countless decadence and independance revolts the Great Green Glob is still going strong with over 100k troops.

I love the random land Burgundy has in Anatolia.

Heh I knew somebody would notice that. Burgundy has been the bane of my existence for the last 50 years. In this game I started as the OPM count of Ostereich in Bavaria and limited myself to taking the land in de-jure Germania and having the final goal of putting my dynasty on as many places as possible. It was a pretty fun game to play while I was waiting for conclave. :) Here's the dynasty map mode:

I cut off Jerusalem at the bottom by accident and I also had Sweden, France and Italy in my pocket too but they kept giving way to factions without going to war even though our dynasty's combined manpower was nearly 200K.

The irony is that a week ago, people we complaining that the blobs always form and never disintegrate.

Well, they do. The Karlings are just a special case. I rarely see the Seljuks or Byzantine's break up. Pretty much any Emperor level title never collapses in vanilla CK2.

Under the beta patches and Conclave, I've seen the Blobassids, Umayyads, Francia, and major Indian empires disintegrate. None of them by my hand. (I've also seen Charlemagne and his brother screw up the unification of Pepin's empire, resulting in a squabbling mass of insanity in France and Germany for two centuries, but I'm sure that's an outlier.)

The only thing close to a blob that never seems to disintegrate is Byzantium, but I also rarely see it blob too far past its initial borders, so I'd call that a wash.

I just saw Karlomans Lombard grandson form it 2 days ago. It's now elective and massive.

Not in Conclave, but before that I saw him form HRE a couple of times. Charlie or Karloman usually make Francia in my Conclave games (~60% chance) if I'm not interacting with him in any way. It's always elective. This from my current game:
