If you don't want them to upgrade you can always click the "do not upgrade button"-there are some advantages to light tank divisions, especially early war.
Is there an easy way to mod it so that other types of divisions can upgrade into a different type of division in the same way? Like say regular Infantry upgrading into Motorized Infantry and Motorised Infantry upgrading into Mechanized Infantry?
No, the light arm division upgrading to medium arm is hardcoded. Unfortunately you cannot mod in similar stuff for other divs.
IIRC, besides the cheaper costs, the light tank model (advanced?) that upgrades to basic medium tank has a better air defense and lower fuel and supply consumption than the latter. May also be a difference in TC drain. Thru 1940, infantry hard attack is so low that advanced light tanks do pretty well.
That would be Improved Light Tank div as the Advanced Light Tank [1943] is a bde, not a division.
The reason to NOT build Light Tank divisions is that they do NOT benefit from obsolete upgrading. Armor-II tank divisions also upgrade to basic medium armor [armor-III], and if you keep an old serial run going for the ArmorII, you can eventually benefit from obsolete upgrading by the time that you research ArmorIV [improved armor]. A long series of ArmorII can also be started much earlier for most countries, and this can benefit greatly from gearing which is always the cheapest way to build, while you usually have to research improved light tanks [1939] before you can build them.

So....bottom line is that the game will automatically upgrade every Light Tank Division to Medium Tank Division. And that it is hard coded into the game to do this and NO way to stop it?

If you dont wanna upgrade your tank unit simply press the button for no upgrade on the division.
This has always baffled me too.
And also the fact that Adv light tank is a brigade, not a Div, which seems impossible to tell from the tech screen.
Maybe light tanks should get less penalties in certain terrain? Well, didn't look if they already have....
As for why it's in at all, I guess because the early tank divs had indeed lotsa light tanks that were replaced by medium armour later...

You can stop it, just select the unit and press the "do not upgrade" button
