In the bug forum there are several reports on the fact that light ships does not actually provide any trade power on "Protect trade" missions, except if you actually own a province covered by any given node. Fleet basing rights may or may not also do the trick. Just sending your fleet to project power does nothing.

Did I miss a meeting somewhere where this was changed, or is this a bug? I haven't been able to find any statement from Paradox either way.

It just seems incredible to me that this is not fixed. I like playing trade heavy games, and I guess I am in the minority, but trade is entirely pointless at the moment.

@StarNaN you can star a game with England, try to put some boats on Lubëck node, and your boats will not give you trade power with or without a merchant on the node.

Then, you can integrate Lubëck for example and your boats will give you trade power.

I tried it, it works like that at the moment.

Doesn't seem to. Loading up England in 1701 and sending the light ships from London to Chesapeake to protect trade, they are listed as present, but not applying any power. Just like the other examples in the bug thread.

Though if I rebase the fleet to the Thirteen Colonies and start the mission from there, the trade power is correctly applied. Since you have implicit fleet basing rights in your colonies, I am guessing it is the same behaveiour as just getting access from another random country.

If you dont have a province in the same area as a trade node, you have to ask for fleet basing rights for it to work.

...but if you have a colonial subject in a trade node, just park your fleet in any of your subjects ports and start the mission from there.

Come on, it's been said thousand of times in the bug forum, you don't need a savegame it's the same for anyone.
Just Pick any country and a far away trade node, send ships to steer trade or privateering and nothing will happen.

I've also noticed in my Castile game that I can't privateer Constantinople without having to reset the mission every month. I have 0 TP in Constantinople, however I also have 0 TP in Ragusa and can privateer there normally. Don't think I've actually tried basing the privateer fleet into Naples before starting the mission, maybe doing that will fix it.

Weird bug.

I also tried protecting trade in the black sea. So far it seems I don't get any trade power from light ships in trade nodes other than my home node ( The English Channel)

Why this was not fixed in a hotfix already is just baffling.
Yeah right now I have pretty much retired my holland game. I already got near complete control of english channel but i cant increase my income anymore because i cant use my fleet of light ships to transfer tons of money into my node.

Owning a province in the trade node or having fleet basing rights seem's to make light ships work again.

Also, priveteering doesn't seem to be affected, only protecting trade.

Wow good that I spot this thread before I tried to pull trade from outside of my nodes.

I am in a denmark into England Iron Price achievement run at the moment. I have 50% control from trade power in province across north sea to Lubeck and Neva > Baltic > Lubeck by owning the estuary and trading center.

I plan to move my collecting center over to London and pull all trade there. Should be interesting to see how much money I end up with.

I would like to add that the requirement for light ships is not just that you own a province in the node: I am trying to protect trade in Indus region. It does nothing, of course. So I full annex Sind who have Kalat, Quetta and Siwi provinces from Indus node. These provinces are inland. My light ships still do not provide any trade power in Indus node. On the trade node menu, it lists the ships as protecting trade and giving 127.5 trade power but only when I hover over the merchant present part, the trade power is not actually being applied.

For some reason as well, some nations in this node have caravan power (despite it not being an inland node) and I do not, despite having a merchant there and over 2k development.
