NOTE: This is my first post, but have been lurking around the forums for a while now. Just thought to share my experiences with the game.
Our Story begins with with an Invasion, as some great stories are about, it told of a great Duke fighting two kings and coming out victorious. It told of his victories. This is the story of his lineage
Our King William The Conqueror, died at the ripe age of 47, he had spent alot of his time fighting his vassals and eventually bringing them under his control. He was succeeded by his third son Richard I (Later known as 'the Great') Richard's elder brothers had both died young. Prince Robert in a hunting accident (hmmmm) and William after ingesting poison.
With a name like 'the Great', you can expect that his reign was prosperous, and stable. Towards the end of his reign, the English culture had begun to develop and his son, Prince Richard, was being educated by His Father the King. It was hoped that the King's traits and knowledge could be taught to the Prince.
Alas, that was not the case.
Prince Richard had grown up to be a cruel, envious and craven young man. He later developed a fondness of deceit. With the death of his Father, our young Prince took the throne and was crowned as King Richard II.
The beginning of his reign was riddled with war as vassals sought to test the mettle of the Young King. During the reign of his Father and Grandfather, the crown authority of the king had been raised to Medium, however the vassal's felt chafed under the king. The Dukes of Lancaster, Cornwall and Hereford approached the King in order to reduce the the Crown Authority.
Our King was wroth! 'How Dare these upstarts threaten ME?!?!' he cried. War broke out in the realm. The king had been left a vast war chest and the kind liberally used it to hire mercenaries to fight his upstart vassals. The War went well, while his treasury emptied at an alarming rate. However the King had calculated that he would be able to finish the war before he ran out of money. However, things that can go wrong....will go wrong at the worst possible time.
Such a thing happened here.
The Pope, in his wisdom, excommunicated Richard II. All hell broke loose. Vassal's revolted and sought independence. Armies sprung up and a French Plot allied with the Bastard Duke of Norfolk was brought into play to replace me with the young son of Norfolk.
What was our King to do? He had not enough men to fight so many wars. Nor did he have the funds to outlast them. With his dynasty's future in his hands, he surrended to the Dukes of Lancaster, Cornwall and Hereford and agreed to reduce Crown Authority. He promptly defeated Norfolk by crushing his army and occupying his lands.
The French however continued raping and pillaging my Norman lands. This would be the last time they would do such a thing. The English King waited. Soon enough a letter arrived. His court Chaplin has convinced the Pope that I was a good man! He lifted the Excommunication. The French eventually realised that fighting a favoured son of the Pope was not in their best interest as they were excommunicated and they slipped into a Civil War that would last the next 80 years.
Richard II was a tired man. With his limiting of the Crown Authority, he watched helpless as Lancaster, Cornwall, Kent and Hereford invaded their neighbours and increased their personal demesne.
Richard II 'the Ill-Ruled' died a broken man. His only Son, King Richard III vowed to never be brought low as his father had been forced to.
