Kurt_Steiner: I would think that too but the us-american ai is very stubborn and manages it to create doomstacks of 30+ divisions even in situations like these. So pretty much anything could happen.

Viden: We will see if Mexico finally acts. In the roughly six months they had been in the war the only thing the mexican army does is running its divisions from one border province to the next, back and forth.
Maybe the mexican ai is bold and brave enough to start a real invasion of california before the yankees enlist new divisions in the west.

Libertad o Muerte! - Pt. XLVI

1863header.jpg

In early january Carlos VI., king of Spain and brother of Juan I. died under mysterious circumstances in the Palacio Real in Madrid. With no heir of his own he was succeeded by his youngest brother Fernando who was crowned king of Spain on the 11th of January.
Being more liberal than his predecessors, his father (Carlos V.) and his brother (Carlos VI.), he wasn't seen as a true carlist and opposed by the die-hard carlists. To stabilize his position he left the internal affairs untouched for the moment and concentrated more on foreign affairs. He began to normalize the affairs with Platinea by recognizing Platine independence.

On the first of May Hernando Seles the governor of Buenos Aires was shot by a radical reactionary in front of his home. The newspapers stated that the assassin had the goal to end the governors open door policy towards imigration which had exploded due to the civil war in the United States of America.

Due to the extended need of steamers, forced by government policies, platinean entrepreneus saw a golden opportunity and began the construction of a steamer shipyard in Santa Fé province.

1863shipyard.jpg

The year 1863 was a very good one for platinean science the discovery of Empiricism and Pragmatism in January soon gained worldwide recognition furthering improving trust and prestige in platinean sciences.

In December leading economists developed "early classical theory and critique" improving the governments possibilities to collect money from taxes and tariffs while ensuring new opportunities for entrepreneurs to gather capital more easily for new companies and factories.

On New Year's Eve the brazilian emperor along with his family and many important brazilian politicians visited the new year festivities in the royal palace at La Plata. While enjoying themselves on the glamourous ball a deal was forged by the heads of government. Key technologies were traded for the further improvement of both antions.
And while the politicians were first and foremost concerned bargaining the technology transfer the crown prince Juan-Carlos was enthralled by a young lady of the brazilian court.

In the spring of 1863 the mexican high command finally decided to start a full fledged invasion of the United States western states. With no regular troops left in those states, the mexican army only met sparse resistance by armed farmers and goldminers. On their march through California the mexican troops seized several millions in gold and where greeted by the mexican population of California.
Until year's end the mexicans had occupied almost all of California and the western parts of Nevada.

Facing one costly defeat after the other the US Army had lost too many men to replenish their divisions. And now effectively reduced to the area of New England the US government became so desperate that Abraham Lincoln brought forward a "Draft Bill" to enlist hundreds of thousands of fresh recruits to turn the tide against the Confederacy.
The "Draft Bill" became very unpopular among the common men because it allowed those with enough money to pay a compensation to evade enlistment. Especially among the poor imigrants in the large coast cities frustration turned into anger. And in New York anger turned into open rebellion. Common Workers stormed police stations plundered weapon depots and began to hunt down the african-american population of New York. More than one hundrer african-americans were lynched in the streets.
Martial law was put into action and army units fought down the mobs with artillery and fixed bayonets. After a week of bloody battles the rebellion was over, leaving more than one thousand dead in the streets.

1863acwdraftriots.jpg

The war in the east devolved into a stalemate with both sides sitting in their trenches shelling each other with artillery.
In June the unionists attacked Washington again despite loosing more than 60,000 men they gained the upper hand and the confederated troops retreated across the Potomac, leaving the piece of rubbel that once was Washington DC behind.
In the following months one union offensive after the after tried to gain a foothold south of the Potomac, and failed. The losses counted higher and higher and the Potomac became a bloody mud pit.
The green union soldiers died faster than new ones could be enlisted.

Davisx3m: It indeed is the most successfull confederacy I've ever seen in any of my games.

Kurt_Steiner: At the moment Mexico and the Confederacy are benevolent allies and they probably will keep cordial relations for a long time.

Viden: I know. But Abraham Lincoln was very persistent and the US ai ist die hard stubborn! They even declined a peace deal in which the CSA demanded the states of Missouri, Kentucky and Oklahoma (which due to my modding already belong to the CSA).

Then, what? Will the CSA absorb all the States outside New England? Will the US become New England?

Here are some stats of the ongoing conflict(s) in North America.

War exhaustion:
USA: 44,9%
CSA: 42,6%
Mexico: 11.0%

The American Civil War:
losses = { tag = CSA value = 3132.098 }
losses = { tag = USA value = 4432.085 }

Mexican Intervention:
losses = { tag = MEX value = 328.496 }
losses = { tag = USA value = 80.400 }

With both sides having their war exhaustion in the low forties the war was going to draw to its close (or massive rebellions). So far the USA had suffered the loss of 4.5 million men while the CSA suffered the loss of 3.1 million men. Altogether 7.6 million dead, a fifth of the pre-secession population of the entire USA.

Viden: If both the CSA and the USA would be controlled by humans and not by the ai we might see considerable changes on the political map of North America. But they aren't and so the CSA might only get two or three useless provinces from the US despite the US total defeat.
And the CSA might not be to eager to get anti-slavery states into their Confederacy, so maybe they just take Maryland, Delaware and New Mexico.
On the other hand the key question would be what does Mexico aim for? Same as before the ai might just white peace despite the large gains in California or would be fobbed off with a single border province, San Diego if they are lucky. But with the US Military hiding in New England, unable to stop the Mexican advance why not go for all the territories lost to the USA the in Mexican-American War (except for Texas of course)?
I always had a weak spot for Crimson Skies, if you know what I mean. :D

Libertad o Muerte! - Pt. XLVII

1864header.jpg

In April of 1864 Prime Minister Mitre elongated brazilian help for the reforms of the landforces by a new contract with the brazilian emperor. More military advisors were hired as well as more modern weapons from brazilian arsenals. His policy of "national strength" was cheered among the conservative opposition while many of his own party members thought of it as a waste of money.
On 1st of May four more divisions were enlisted for the reserves which now consisted of 12 infantry divisions.

1864techdeal.jpg

The platinean navy got its share, too. But due to the new steamdriven battleships unravelled in the American Civil War while all platinean ship building programs were canceled, as none of the platinean ships still under construction would be able to challenge those new rulers of the seven seas. Instead Prime Minister Mitre ordered to expand the naval bases in La Plata and Valparaiso as well as founding a new one at Puntas Arenas.
In the Naval Ministry one was eager to get hands on the new technology. But all research so far hadn't brought useful results.

1864portexpansion.jpg

At the national holiday celebrations in memoration of the successfull revolution at the royal palace in La Plata, King Juan I. announced the betrothal of Crown-Prince Juan-Carlos and Isabel, Princess Imperial of Brazil.
The attending nobility cheered the coupled and the newspapers praised the brazilian princess in their following issues. But some members of parliament were not amused at all. Despite the constitution did not explicitly states that marriages of the successors to the platinean throne had to be ratified by parliament they strongly proclaimed and demanded the opposite. A following debate in parliament ended without results, and the matter was soon forgotten amongst the common people.

1864fiance.jpg

In October Prime Minister Mitre with the royal family in attendance inaugurated the "Royal War Museum" in La Plata. In the huge palace like building many samples of weapons, flags and uniforms from all of Platinea's wars were displayed the major part came from the private collection of the late General Gutierrez.

1864warmuseum.jpg

In early November an american seaman and inventor by the name of Grayson arrived in La Plata harbour upon a british merchantmen with only two bags. One with his few personal belongings. And one filled to the brim with engineering drawings from US Naval Department. The middle-aged man, who had escaped the collapsing United States didn't came to Platinea by accident or as a refugee but was lured by gold. One of Baron Moreno's "trade agents" in New York got interested in Mr. Grayson who was an engineer at the Broolyn Naval Yard. When it became obvious that Grayson not only was building ironclad warships for the USN but also was designing a new steamdrive Baron Moreno activated two of his "specialists" to shadow him. When in early October the war-republicans and peace-democrats battled each other in the streets of New York Moreno's specialists took action. They kidnapped Grayson without further ado and ransacked his design drawings and then smuggled him out of the USA to Halifax. There they convinced and bribed Grayson to cooperate. Upon a british freighter the specialists escorted him to La Plata where his design drawings were joyfully received and marked the first step of the platinean ironclad program.

1864scientistdefects.jpg

Only a few days later leading naval engineers lead by Mr. Grayson began to draw the first designs for steampowerd and ironclad warships.

Nice updates:)

I hope once the pants-on-head AI peace of the ACW fires, you will re-arrange the map manually. A CSA that has beaten the US this badly should get a lot more than indipendence. On the other hand, both powers are very exhausted. Perhaps a fracturing (remainig colonies, great lakes, CSA Magna, semi-indipendent inidians, mexican California) is in order? With the possibility of a CSA- indian war?

The war in the eastern theatre continued with the same deadly boringness in 1864 as it had in '63. Though the fortifications and trench-systems became more elaborate the living conditions of the soldiers became more pitiful by the day. Most soldiers lived in stinking, watery mudholes with only a coat and a sheet to protect themselves against the cold and the rain. The really lucky ones managed to build a little shack in the bomb crater blotched countryside.
The Confederacy always aware of their inferior numbers didn't dare to attack the unions fortified lines but were "playing it out". President Toombs and his cabinet were very well aware of the dire situation of their counterparts in the north. And due to the horrible defeats and the overall miserable situation in the remaining unoccupied states of the union President Lincoln's reelection was very doubtful. So the confederates just sit and wait hoping for a "peace candidate" carrying the vote.
On the other side of the "no man's land" the union soldiers were send time and again against the confederate lines and every time thy payed a high blood toll for almost no gain. President Lincoln not only feared to lose his reelection but he feared most that the Union really could lose this war. Lincoln knew that only major victory on the battlefield would turn the tide on both the wareffort as well as in the polling booth. Lincoln pushed his generals to break through the enemies lines in the west of Pennsylvania in order to broaden the frontline, which would be a perfect opportunity for the Union to bring their superior numbers to greater effect, and to reconquer at leat Ohio and Indiana until the presidential elections. States which were considered as Lincoln territory.
But all attempts failed and on the first Sunday in November the troops sat in the almost exact same position as the year before.

1864acwsiege.jpg

Union soldiers mining a tunnel beneath confederate lines and filling it with explosives.

The war on the atlantic on the other hand saw some major engagements. The USN invested all of its resources in the new Monitors and Ironclads but due to the loss of important coal and iron producing regions they progressed only slowly. When the CSN began harassing union ports in March 1864 destroying important merchant vessels as well as some military sailing ships the USN send its new ironclads and monitors squadron to counterattack the confederate raiders on their way to New York. In the Hudson Bay 18 Ironclads engaged in battle.
The Battle of Hudson Bay went on for three days, from dawn till sunset. And while the union ships could withdraw to New York harbor to resupply and for makeshift repairs the confederate ships got their ammunition from support ships anchoring down the coast. While on the first day not a single ship was sunk on the second day the boiler of the USS Roanoke exploded and the CSS Tennessee had suffered so much beating that she had to be towed away at the end of the day.
On the third day the Confederate ships steamed full speed ahead into battle and rammed their surprised opponents. Within the first hour another three union vessels were sunk. Outnumbered nine to four the union squadron began its retreat up the Hudson river, but before night came another two vessels were sunk.
On the following day the confederate ironclads shelled the US Naval Yard at Brooklyn completely unopposed destroying many half-built union ironclads.

1864acwnaval.jpg

The shelling of the naval yard at Brooklyn (left) and the "Battle of Hudson Bay" (right).

Still unopposed the Mexican army continued their invasion of the american west. By September they had occupied all of California and the Nevada territory as well as the western parts of the Utah territory and the south of Oregon.

acwmexicanadvance.jpg

In northern Oregon, at the harbor of Astoria the Mexican met first opposition. But not by the US Army, but by the British Royal Navy.
A squadron of the Royal Navy laid for anchor and the commanding Rear-Admiral informed the Mexican commander that "all territory claimed by the government of the United States north of 42° latitude, namely the state of Oregon, are under the protection of the British crown. Every further incursions would be regarded as hostile acts against British rule."

1864acwseattle.jpg

The British Squadron at Astoria harbor.

The democrats elected General George B. McClellan as their candidate for the white house. McClellan a staunch supporter of a quick peace with the Confederacy managed it to blame President Lincoln for all military disasters and to sell himself as a war hero.
But despite all the hardships the american people had to suffer and dire situation on the battlefields Lincoln wasn't that easy to beat and he put up a fight everywhere where McClellan was campaigning.

1864acwpresidentmac.jpg

Especially the north-east, the New England area stuck with the president. But McClellan managed it to carry the two most populous states by a narrow margin, New York and Pennsylvania. States which had seen the most fighting in 1864. Together with the votes from Delaware and New Jersey McClellan amassed a total of 69 electoral votes, while President Lincoln only got 42.
After his defeat Lincoln declared a ceasefire.

1864acwelections.jpg

The states under confederate occupation are depicted in the same gray as the territories.

Indeed. The question is: Will the Union survive the war? And in what shameful shape?
