Playing HoI2 once again as Germany, I noticed something interesting...and odd.

Poland, prewar, as we know, had control of Danzig and other German national provinces. However, after 1939, these are in German control as German national province.

But, if you go to the Liberate option, it basically forces Germany to liberate a post-WW2 Poland, including Stettin, Kustrin and Breslau (the HoI2 provs), as well as Konigsberg.

My question is: will a wartime Germany be able to, if it wishes, liberate an area approximating the control area of the General Government in Poland?

I agree, we should be able to decide which province we liberate, but the part of the occupied country we are keeping for us should continue to have disssent and be considered as national provinces of the "liberated" country...

It'd beautiful if YOU can choose the provinces in liberated states options.

IIRC that's how it worked in EU3 so perhaps we will have the ability to modify default liberation. Perhaps there will even be different setups depending on the country that's liberating.

I don't know about custom liberation - I'm of the opinion that it does have to be within reason...but that said, customisation should be possible. I'd create a Polish state with a "DMZ" aka where I launch Barba from along the Polish-Soviet border.

EU3 didn't allow customization of created vassal countries. However, Paradox can easily implement a rule that prevents released countries having your cores. That would solve your problem.

If HOI3 does not support designating the provinces to liberate, then PI could desgnate the area of the Generalgouvernement as a puppet state only producing a few Militia and/or Garison units.

In vanilla HoI2, you can liberate Poland without German national provinces

And they have. While the liberate country screen in HoI2 shows *all* provinces of a vassal which you control, it will only grant it those which aren't your own cores. I don't know what happens when you try to liberate a vassal of which all provinces are your cores, but I bet at least the vassal's capital needs to be non-core for a master to release it.

Are we playing a different version of the game or something? Because I played as Germany in unpatched Armageddon, and the Poland that I released was tiny and landlocked. In fact, I believe it's impossible to give away your own core provinces.

Definitely agree that being able to customize released countries would be nice, though.

1. As WE know, Danzig was not under polish control pre-war. It was a free city under League of Nations protection.

2. As few posters have already stated. When you liberate Poland as Germany in HOI2 you only give them provinces with polish cores not the ones with polish AND german cores.

Why ? In HoI2 it gives you a puppet state with some industrial/military potential and liberates some of your troops from anti-partisan duty. Makes perfect sense to me.

I never did it myself because of home rules. I don't think Hitler would EVER consider this decision. But it can be a rational thing to do from pure military perspective.

Even if you release a nation, it SHOULDN'T receive provinces that are your own cores. Therefore you cannot liberate nations that has all cores in your core provinces, like UK cannot liberate Scotland, Wales, England but Germany who takes over UK can liberate those.

I don't think Hitler would EVER consider this decision.

Well, he did consider some kind of "reststaat" for few moments in 1939/40, but we had no "Quisling" or elites willing to collaborate, and most important, Stalin would never agreed for such idea wuring the German-Soviet alliance.
