I'll fire up a campaign soon.

Having played Hindu Sukhothai, I need suggestions on what religion to convert to. Maybe Shinto? Japanese as primary culture is also quite strong due to all the sick events.

I've played my run to 1500:

Ming is slightly butthurt, something like 125 AE. Ayuthaya was over 200 but they squished. Ming lost mandate so it might be time to make a run on them. I don't have DLC so no karma garbage, just boring bland religion. Though I finally got those zealot rebels so that could help. Sunni is tempting too, and I'm annexing Ligore.

Obviously I'm a LITTLE points-starved here, something about blowing it all on picking up more land. Oh well.

This is only possible if you keep the pedal down and truce lock out the coalitions. 1st war was bringing in 4 people on Lan Xang and co belligerent Mong Yang and Pegu (vassaled them, took like 5 provinces off Lan Xang). Ayuthaya piled on Pegu and so I inherited that war. A *defensive* war, which allowed me to bring in all my allies. Since everyone in the region who wasn't allied abhorred me already I just never stopped :p.

I obviously have no interest in exploration. Maybe religious, maybe diplomatic, maybe influence. I took enforced heritage so probably not humanist...this is why I am thinking Sunni. I can no-CB some shlub near middle east that isn't too popular and make a run on Mecca or something, open another front.

Having played Hindu Sukhothai, I need suggestions on what religion to convert to. Maybe Shinto? Japanese as primary culture is also quite strong due to all the sick events.

With a vengeance - is that a bite you've taken out of Ming?!! If so, that's quite the turnaround :).

Lost mandate, so I went to take Yunnan since there was nowhere else to go. Sadly, this run has been retired because I have a tendency to leave DoW screens open and accidently declared war on Pegu, Ming (recovered) and my ally Dai Viet. Oh well.

I can't accept rebel demands into animist, only break / enforce?

And by no CB you mean 100% them and then offer to convert?

Tengri does seem slick. I can stack buddhist + animist + shamanist decisions right? Wouldn't even have to go religious :V

Could also go animist -> reformed during westernization. Haven't played a reformed nation in a bit~

Correct, only break. You can look at it in the game files too, comparing animist to say shamanist.

You can indeed stack the decisions, but getting forced into different religions multiple times takes a speed toll. I only suggested it because it sounded like you were looking for something novel. Having enforced heritage, animist conversion power decision, stab cost/prestige/etc all stacked up as Japan was kind of nice, but at the end of the day working the animist switch into that was costly. Fun though, and I bet most people don't convert to Catholic that way as Japan :p.

I got another 30 years in today, thought I could catch Ming with mandate lost but they got it back really fast and I had a real fight on my hands, took about 7 years to take 84% war score off them and they have like, 200 AE now so I'm committed to that until they shatter or die. At least I have Dali and Xi out and Dali is almost full sized. I'll have to just poke at India for now. I am Hindu at least so that helps...I kept juggling the rebels pictured above for such a long time lol. It's boring but I think religious --> influence or vice versa is the way to go, then add administrative post westernization. I might just straight go religious then westernize too. I'm not sure if I want to use Cape, Morocco, or Genoa, Cape is often most straightforward even without westernization but if the AI is slow there it can bite you. Genoa and Ceuta are almost always there and you can fogwalk them w/o exploration if you can win the wars. I'm obviously already strong enough to hammer the Mamluks since tech 8 is current.

I've played my run to 1500:

You're a machine . Finally got off the ground in my run, didn't get a window to cut loose until 1481, but had laid the groundwork to make good when it happened (Pegu attacked me with a conquest CB, so I got all my allies (Dai Viet, Mong Yang, Ava and Arakan) against all their allies (Lan Xang and Hsenwi), and it was never going to end well for them, so now looking a bit more sustainable long-term:

Lan Na 1488.jpg

Up to about 1495 or the like, and things just got messy because Ava DoW'd Taungu, which is allied with Ayutthaya and Mong Yang, and because I back my faithful allies so I'm in unless what they're doing is really silly (which it's not - if they hadn't have attacked Taungu, I had it on my mind to have a crack soon), so not sure which way the war will go. Main hope is to knock out Hsenwi and Mong Yang early - if we can do that, then we should be able to take on Ayutthaya. If not, then Lan Na might be getting a little smaller again ;).

I started up a game this morning and got pretty lucky. I headed south-west through Pegu and Tuangu with some allies. But strangely Ayutthaya remained friendly and is now my ally. I'm gonna use them to grow a bit more before i stab them in the back! My income doubled after taking the two trade centers and moving trading port to Bengal!

So I allowed myself to just create this video, with small quick overview of starting position of Lan Na, ideas etc, and some scrub tips to opening. Nothing too fancy, just me, and my voice and some Lan Na footage. I put link in description to point to this thread. If you liked the idea, or format, just let me know, and if the whole video was terrible (which probably was, you can also let me know that).

Edit: Or not. Thumbnail will be sorted out, at least I hope so :p

My 1455 start at Lan Na.

TqZ1TpK.jpg

I took a bite + humiliation against Pegu and annexed Taugu during a war with Lan Xang -- the game allied up before I could take on Taugu alone. I used Da Viet to fight them (I certainly didn't have the army).

I was extremely ... lucky(?) and picked up the Ignore Insult for +60 relations 3 times in five years - I'm allied to Ayutthaya, Khmer, and Da Viet. Unfortunately, they are all extremely unwilling to go to war - something about exhausting themselves in the first set of warfare.

Ava just became my vassal after they took out Arakan in their war. I managed to fight that one on my own. +1 level of military made the battle extremely easy. Lost way more troops to attrition while laying siege to the capital. It wasn't so much that I think Ava would be a great vassal as I need to actually start saving Admin points...

Ming is really friendly and should ally me now - hoping to use them to pound a way into Bengal soon. Or maybe jump to Ceylon as a way to start breaking into India. Planning on exploration for my first idea. Finally picked up a heir this year but - 1/2/1. Hope he lives long enough to become a general..

This particular religion is interesting but..NOT me. I'm pretty sure I'll convert as soon as I can arrange it.

Man, Ming breaking up, friendly Ming...what is this nonsense :p. Ming WARNED me inside 10 years, guess they didn't like that I got Mong Yang first :(. Not that their warning meant anything, since the only nations I could declare on that bordered them were allies. They also got so much AE despite being heretic that I had to declare multi-wars a few times or I'd have had a coalition war on my hands. Even now they're a problem after ripping out Dali and a little more since they have 225 AE; literally anything else I piss off will join coalition alongside Ming if I let them do it on truce ending.

Man, Ming breaking up, friendly Ming...what is this nonsense :p.

To add to the Ming nonsense, they expanded for a while in my game. I think it was in reaction to the giant Uzbek that was up there for a while. Was pretty scary either way. They just started to explode though, so I dodged a bullet.

^The big rebel clump up north is a group of Uzbek separatists.

Sadiya and Kham are my vassals. Pattani just declared war on me for that one province I have just south of Khmer, so I'll have to get my allies to help me beat 'em up. A bit weaker than I'd like to be after beating Mong Yang and co. into the ground, but it eliminated one threat (and was very satisfying to take 9 provinces in the deal)
India seems to be consolidating very quickly, too.
That's all I can really think of, going to resume this right now.

My run started smoothly, attacked my neighbors and my ally Ayutthaya helped me against the bigger foes. Once Ayutthaya became hostile, I was big enough to eat them. Although a huge muslim threat arose: Malacca was allied with Bengal (scary enough) and they also allied Bahmanis - India's current superpower. So even though I might look big, I frequently get attacked. Ming just collapsed some 5 years ago and I'm starting to eat into the remains.

I decided to colonize which gave me some base development without conquering (there was a long time when I was only surrounded by either Ming (or nations they border - they warned me) or my allies. So I went for colonies.

My early allies: Ayutthaya, Dai Viet, Ava, Arakan. First to go was Ava since they were allied with Pegu.

I stayed Buddhist although I detest the religion in game. And my initial ruler lived quite long (into his/her60s') so I had a lot of points to core. My following rulers were all average. Madurai is my current vassal in southern India. Janpur and Dai Viet are my remaining allies.
