"Excellent" bonuses? Not so much, unless compared against generics. They're reasonable though, and NI implementation is one of those things where the game really has come a long way.

Buddhism is awful though, with DLC on it's easily seated as the bottom tier religion. I did an opening as Khmer recently where I went animist which was kind of fun, but Lan Na doesn't have that kind of spread in 1444. Your best bet is probably just a swap into Hindu or Sunni. Religious is technically better but humanist is more relaxing, if you don't take the -heathen tolerance stuff you can have pretty solid unity.

Runs are going to diverge based on if/when Ming collapses, a lot.

Some of them are pretty good, though. +10% infantry combat, +2 TTF, and +1 diplo relations are all quite good. And, none of them are bad.

Honestly, in my opener I was seriously considering taking an Animist province off Hsienwi or whatever that nation is north of Lan Na, somehow getting down to one province, and then bankrupting myself to become Animist and work with that kind of position, but I decided against it because bankruptcy tricks are pretty annoying to do honestly.

Except for the TTF and good produced (is that even as good as it was before?), their ideas are really nothing to write home about. Gonna start one tonight.

Religious is below par considering the glut of Theravada around Lan Na. Only Dai Viet is heretic and you have to eat through all the Shan's before you get to the Sunnis/Hindus in the West. Probably not worth it. Admin is likely best choice because this region is toxic for manpower, mercs are mandatory. Of course, there's this adaptability thing too.

I'm going to go for colonizing, conquering slowly as I'm able to build Karma through alliance calls. It's the only way to expand while staying in neutral Karma, so I'm going to see how well it works. I'll have to take a hit early to grab a coastal province, but that's okay.

For those of you looking to switch to Hindu, Khmer has a few Hindu provinces, and fairly often actually collapses to Hindu rebels and switches itself. Even the AI knows that Buddhism is terrible ;)

As of patch 1.12, if animist rebels enforce/break you then you can become animist. This does not work for Tengri, Totemist, etc, but Animist has a different line of code:

Well, I learned something. Time to start over because Animist is significantly less obnoxious to play compared to Buddhist right now.

Sure it's quicker to go animist, but I'd rather wait until I expand into Khmer/Champa and switch to Hindu instead. Animist isn't much better than Theravada.

You don't get penalized for playing the game, and that's good enough for me.

Besides, Animist is fun to spread regardless.

I grade out 10% more discipline and markedly less unrest as "much better", especially when you add prestige and cheaper stability to the equation :p.

A westernizing animist can switch into Christian while keeping animist too. It's a painful set of steps to take but it might be worth that investment. I felt much stronger with Catholic Japan than Shinto, though admittedly my wonky approach to westernizing w/o exploration in that game led me to have 7 cardinals by 1600.

+1 TTF and -1 unrest with another -1 unrest decision is pretty good unto itself though. Animist lacks conversion power, but if you're starting in a different faith you can even bolster that. And yes, spreading animist is fun :p. For a real lulzy challenge, hit up Buryatia early and make them force you into Tengri :D.

There do seem to be quite a few events that give positive karma so its not that difficult to conquer provinces. Also force vassalisation and annexation doesn't have a karma penalty other than the declaration of war so thats what I've done twice so far. I did have to restart a couple of times after first honouring an alliance that turned out to be disastrous and then starting a similarly disastrous war. The third attempt is going better.

Well, I made it to 1500.

Started out with a mission to remove Taungu from the map, followed by a mission to get a coastline by beating up Arakan. From there I just took a couple provinces from whoever I really could afford to. I got quite lucky, Tilokaraj survived well into his 60s...and then my luck said "nope" and his heir died three years after taking the throne.
Took Admin ideas, since that heir was a 6/5/4, then he went ahead and died. Forget what my current one is, though.

I intend to get into India and convert to Hinduism that way...
But I'm quite boxed in, though. Pegu is allied with Mong Yang and Lan Xang, Hsenwi is allied to Ming...and Bengal is just outright stronger than me.
So now, I settle in to wait for someone to make a mistake.
I think that covers it for now.

Alright, first war done, already have over 50 AE with the Theravada nations and -10% discipline. Thankfully Khmer is Hindu now (less than 30 AE) and my diplomats are keeping the coalition away. Lan Xang is next on the chopping block.

Here is my start. Dai Viet, Khmer and various nations above were my early allies. Hsenwi are my vassal whilst Pegu has just been annexed. I can ally Ayutthaya so I think I'm going to do that and expand to the north west instead. Lan Xang is allied with Ming otherwise they would be next.

Nice work early @Dell19 and commiserations @zxImmortal (I'd say you've still got enough to get through the early 'dangerous' stage, but it'll last a bit longer than it would have otherwise).

I'm in the early 1460s and still with my original three provinces. Have fought a successful (but tough) war against Pegu and Lan Xang to defend Arakan (which, as Arakan was the war leader and it kicked off before I had a chance to put down any claims in Lan Xang, meant a lot of time fighting for no return), but after that had to wait for truce time to tick down (as Pegu, Hsenwi and Lan Xang were all in the mix, and Taungoo is allied to one of my allies (Ava) which I'd rather hang onto). Have pumped a lot of points into basetax and production in my provinces so I can support a larger army with some mercs in it for when war breaks out, and laid claims all around me, so hope to 'break out' soon.

While the warfighting is enjoyable, it really is the diplomatic game that brings EU4 together, and Lan Na is a very enjoyable (and varied, depending on how things go) start. You never know quite what's going to happen, and it keeps you on your toes, at least until you're so big you can deal with anything.
