As far as I know, no. Should be fixed next patch though (or possible the patch that is currently in beta might have that fix in it when it actualy goes live, but as far as I know doesn't have it right now)

It's sorta fixed in the beta: you can no longer earn achievements, even in Ironman, if certain settings (like player bonuses) are enabled.

I'm still debating on idea group choice. I will probably do the "own all of Africa" and "Sokoto" type challenges from OP, maybe claim the entire new world also. I have often gone exploration in Africa but don't feel like it this game. Here are the groups I'm considering:

1. Influence: Berber territory is expensive and I can vassal feed there, plus it speeds claims.
2. Religious: I wouldn't take this until a bit later, though it would let me take new world colonies off the colonizers for 0 DIP, and create CNs with only minimal ADM investment.
3. Administrative: it's good everywhere, including here. Great policy alongside influence early and allows reform.
4. Economic: Generally weak in SP, but we have -20% build cost already so we can emphasize that heavily with economic + keep inflation down easier.
5. Quantity: Naval FL in absence of exploration is attractive, and so is the economic aspect. Manpower + recovery lets us taper down merc % of infantry too.
6. Diplomatic: Late game annexation boost
7. Exploration: I don't feel like colonizing much but I will take one point in exploration in the late 1600's or early 1700's and fill in interior Africa.
8. Defensive: Stacking morale with piety + high prestige + high trad can cause some pretty lopsided end-game fights even with low discipline.

Obviously, that's too many ADM groups. In the past I've gone exploration --> economic in Africa as SSS (Sunni sub-Saharan). I can use claim on Castile's province south of Ashanti (who I'm almost done annexing) to take their territory in North Africa. If I can get DIP tech 7 I will have 275 colonial range which is enough to take land in the new world in Brazil + along the coast too. The real objective, however, is to catch up in military tech (I'm almost current there, unlike basically everything else) and see if I can fish an alliance out with France or someone else in Europe. Thanks to tribal federation + manually lowered autonomy I have a force limit of 63, meaning I can put a row of cannons + full combat width front-lines + reinforce reserves and pound on Castile in Europe directly. An alliance lets me station troops without much regard for naval strength. An alliance with France means a serious run on Iberia before 1600.

One tactic that will work regardless is MA + fleet rights with someone, and like 20 cogs stationed in North Africa (like Tunis or something). Once I separate peace out Castile's allies and wipe landing parties I could then run a few quick ferry maneuvers into an ally and walk into Castile. That would allow release of say Granada as a vassal and for me to pre-station troops on the continent in the future, until my navy can catch up.

I think influence (only fill it out at DIP tech 7 or 9) --> quantity (will be ahead of years in MIL by then) --> administrative is going to be my opening. Depending who colonizes Africa I might have to no-CB my way to the east coast but that's not TOO painful with religious sacrifices decision in place...though I suppose if I can tag a Mamluk ally I can beat on them a little and use the North Africa route.

Maybe a bonus goal with Sokoto path is unifying Islam, without religious ideas :D.

tmit, you are really good at setting campaign goals for yourself.

The OP 'nation' discovery combined with a variation of campaign goals might lead to very different maps in the end...

I don't even recall exactly how to form Sokoto and the wiki has no information lol. I know it's late game only and have to look it up. I'm Sunni and 100% RU already so it's just a curb stomp until then. I think the only way I don't 100% the new world is if my colonial beatdowns go too far and I don't colonize myself.

Sokoto tag swap requires first an automatic event that can start to fire in the late 1700s (1770+, mtth 150). It requires owning Gobir and being Sunni. If you choose the option to invite dan Fodio, you can get some free religion conversions (to Sunni in the Hausa region) and bonus piety, but you lose 2 stability.

To then form the nation, you need sufficient piety, Religious idea group, be independent and not at war, and still own Gobir. You'll then get claims on a bunch of regional provinces (which frankly you probably already own), +25 prestige and piety, and a capital move to Gobir (along with the tag swap). You'll also switch to a theocracy if you're currently still tribal, and you get a different national idea set (Fulani Jihad ideas).

The late year requirement really hurts this event. It's essentially an empire-forming thing, but it comes too late to be of much use. While that does follow history, it's a bit confusing to be so limited in that manner as many other formations can happen substantially earlier (not to mention the completely ahistorical formations that are available). I wouldn't mind seeing an alternative path to forming the nation much earlier without having to wait for an event to fire first.

Hmm, so it requires religious. That might alter what I pick, but in practice I'll probably just grab that 4th or 5th. The ideas are pretty lackluster though if it's only firing that late it barely matters (I'll have milked Hausa's building ideas long before).

Considering I own basically the entire West Africa region that isn't uncolonized (Ashanti is a vassal I'm annexing that is 90% done, and the only remaining native tag to the region), the claims are probably not going to help me much lol.

In contrast to Europe (several, including Italy, BYZ, Prussia, Poland) and Asia (Mughals), Africa doesn't have any really attractive formable nations. For some reason, you can re-form Morocco or Tunis, Arabia if you want to drift or start as Mamluks...and nothing else.

I'm really enjoying this. Thanks for the great idea. I would not have considered playing this nation ever, this is out of my "comfort zone" and maybe I'll learn some of the finer points of play. It's amazing to see what good players can accomplish.

I consider it unforgivable that in 1.12 that Africa doesn't have a -core cost formable

Now that I had the time to sit down and actually start a playthrough, here's my game at 1500. I'm fairly rusty, so this is not my best work in terms of pacing or efficiency, but it was fun to start playing this again.

1V5KzHZ.jpg

Kong, Air, and Yatenga are vassals; Benin is an ally. I'm really not a fan of what Portugal's doing there, by the way. My pacing feels kind of slow (okay, pretty slow), honestly, but I suppose that's what happens when you spend 14 years total stuck with two regencies. I'd probably have restarted if Amina's grandson wasn't a total badass:

Pn9j3Iy.jpg

Run's been fairly standard otherwise. Not sure what idea groups to take, or if I even want to reform the government and westernize (even though not doing so is very obviously a bad idea from a strict powerplay standpoint). Will think on it. Wish I could become a republic, though, but that doesn't look particularly likely.

My attempt at the death of Amina. Katsina, Dagbon and Dahomey are all vassals, so I've actually surpassed her achievements so far. Air, Mossi and Benin are allies (pssh, who needs diplo points?) Definitely going to colonise, but I'm conflicted whether to try and conquer Africa or go for the New World. Maybe both. Either way, it's all staying Animist.

Edit: He's eight. Crud.

The slopshod conquest continues:

Last I left off I was ADM 2. I westernized at 2/3/9 but teched 2/5/10 after it finished. It's been a hard deal mercing out on the Iberians and sitting on level 1 advisors mostly, but I've added a higher ADM guy now. The Ottomans are scary and annoyingly I couldn't do Iberian invasion yet because France hated me. Recently I noticed something strange; Aragon is free from union and rivaling Castile. If I dump Portugal as a rival, I can ally Aragon :D. Aragon will join a war vs Castile, their rival, even at defensive. I'm sure you know how that will end!

Meanwhile while teching to ADM 5 I hit DIP 7 and just stayed there with my 275 range while filling out Influence. I have repeatedly hosed Portugal with claims/sneak landings/subsidies to CN. The ultimate outcome is that I have two large CNs despite no colonists. Both are large enough to colonize without subsidies now, though they need a little bit of rebel babysitting still (1-2 more rebel rounds). Brazil came out with only Expansion ideas, La Plata had enough in plutocratic to have 3% missionary strength NI so they're progressing a little better.

Unfortunately for me, this is one of those strong Ottoman games. Well, I got lucky in Iberia, can't have everything I guess. Religious is opened for now, I didn't want to fill that out pre-adm efficiency but I'm behind in everything so I took that for the events mostly. I will probably grab deus vult because of how early/good it is though before going ADM 17.

England has wisely been ducking me entirely, not allying any potential target of mine nor colonizing remotely near me :D. I'll catch up with them eventually. East Africa is fast other than Ottomans, and I don't have range just yet but will soon.

My Zazzau and the world at the dawn of the 18th century:

388ce21579.jpg

Paramount Chief Muhammad Dadi recently died, the last of the Dadi dynasty, which delivered consistently fantastic rulers to the tune of 4/5/5 etc. Kutumbi Kountché took his place, and proceeded to be utterly awful at everything. His son, Abu Bakr Kado, is 4/0/0. I hope the Kountché dynasty won't last long.

My unbridled expansion was rather bridled by Ottoman alliances – the Ottomans were extremely powerful with a force limit of 240(!) in the early 1600s, when targetting them became an idea for me. They've also been allied to Tunis and Ajuuraan much of the time, preventing me from expanding in those directions. The Muslim bloc is strong. I've gotten one war against Ajuuraan off – they owned most of Ethiopia before. As for Tunis, it is, as you can see, gone. Sus is my vassal, and is having an awful time. They've westernised, but as a direct result of the coring costs up there, they're currently horrifically overextended and at 16 ADM (they were released at 9). Annexing them with influence ideas but not the policy would cost 3640 DIP and take more than 50 years. Nevertheless, I'll get on it once they finally core all their land.

I took exploration awhile to fill the gaps in the African interior, and to connect to Kongo, but I only put two ideas into it, and abandoned it once there were no more colonisable provinces in Africa excepting the coast. It's been replaced with Quality, and I'm hoping to destroy the Ottoman Empire soon, then blaze a train of tribal devastation through Persia and into India.

The unbridled expansion must continue.

So are reforming and westernising independent of each other if you're a tribal govenment? In that case maybe I won't reform.

They are. Check my post – I'm still animist tribal despotism, but also Western and on par technologically. I've only gotten the event that kills my heir once (and the heir sucked).
