You don't need all their cores, no. And adding cores is a simple process, though a long one, you just search for the provinces and add the "TRI" (?) tag. Or someone smarter than me could show you a way for adding that particular core to the entire African continent. The problem then is that, unless you change the localization, you will see things as "French Tripoli" plastered across the continent.

Can I just mod the province files or do I have to edit the save game directly (much more 'fiddly'). As for localisation that's not problem, I'll just change it to say Africa or something. They'd also need a new flag ...

I'm making no promises but this idea might actually happen.

For the flag, a Pan-African tricolor (Red, Black, Green or Red, Yellow Green) should do it, maybe with a red star? You could also use the Angolan one for a nice commie flag. Mozambique or Zimbabwe might be work, too.

EDIT: Mozaambique actually has a AK-47 on it so that might not fit unless you're into editing.

Also, you may be able to widen the scope of your Euro-conquering a bit; Switzerland and North/South Tyrol would be valid targets, seeing as back then they were considered to be part of the theoretical region of Germany.

You would need to edit the save-game directly.

I'm also rather undecided on colonialism - it would of course be extremely hypocritical but from an in game PoV it would be foolish not to take a slice of Africa ...

This offers some great Role Playing opportunities. You could have some support colonization for practical reasons, but run into opposition from the more ideologically sound/idealistic groups who stand against it. Might lead to problems as there could be those who believe the current government is betraying its Revolutionary roots.

In the end the best course of action might just be to just claim you are sparing the "uncivilized" peoples the suffering of having to first go through the failed experiment that is Capitalism before enjoying the benefits of socialism.

OK. You guys have convinced me that Africa should see the light of socialism, to hell with the inevitable modding tedium!

Being a bit of an obssessive type when it comes to these things I've created two potential Pan-African Socialist Union (or whatever we're going to call it) flags.

First a little explanation of the colours before we dive into the two flags.

My extensive wikipedia research tells me that there are two main pan-african flags. One is the Ethiopian flag (red, green and gold) and the other is the UNIA flag (my background flag) which is red, black and green. Therefore the 4 colours of African pan-nationalism have become red, green, black and gold. So I've included gold on both flags in the form of the symbol I put on them.

Here's a quote I found to explain the UNIA flag "red representing the noble blood that unites all people of African ancestry, the colour black for the people, green for the rich land of Africa." - fair enough, on with the flags!

First up we have my initial idea of having a pic of Africa in the middle. Sadly it became increasingly frustrating to make so I had to settle with a tiny little picture in the middle. Not what I would have wanted but I think its OK.

Next we have the hammer and sickle. A little generic but there simply aren't enough hammer and sickle emblems about in the world at the moment and this emblem is pretty big. ;)

Thoughts? Note - please don't take this as a vote I just want opinions. Also no arguements about this.

Why not simply bucket-fill the VSVR's Raised Fist with gold, then paste it onto the UNIA tricolor? Just like how the Hammer and Sickle showed the USSR's role in the creation of its puppet states, the Raised Fist can show your role in spreading socialism abroad.

I agree with this.

I like the African continent one. I think they'd prefer to emphasize Africa rather than socialism on the flag, no matter how ideological they are. Anyway, I think the image of the hammer and sickle came much later? (And even then, the sickle was replacing an earlier image of the hammer and hoe?)

EDIT: Another great image you could use, the black star http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Star_Line If you don't know a lot about African-American & other slaves returning to Africa, look into that and Liberian history.

There's also the question of what language this nation's name should be in, as there isn't any pan-African language. There are a lot of Bantu descendent languages, which are generally mutually intelligible, Swahili being the most popular example of one of these languages, but still, the entirety of West and North Africa generally don't speak these languages.

Why wouldn't it be in English? I'm fairly certain he's playing an English version of the game, so...

Well the name of the VSVR is in German, so I assumed he would continue with the foreign naming scheme.

And that leads to the question, what would it be called in English? Pan-African People's Republic? Or just African People's Republic perhaps.

I like this idea.

It's interesting to think about the role that socialism would play in african politics if introduced without a prior history of decolonization. Historically, opposition to europeans played a large role in african support for communism. How would you unite such disparate people as the africans under a socialist banner (or indeed any banner at all) without that decolonial history? Assuming you don't want to conquer or exploit through trade, how do you stake a claim?

The most plausible mechanism I can imagine would be sending a small colony of socialist "missionaries" to a region. Once there, they would act like an 18th century version of the Peace Corps, giving the locals medicine and teaching them about the wonders of technology and socialism. This would be a fairly small scale movement within Germany I imagine but it wouldn't require much support to win over a small chunk of territory. (On the other hand, what's to say that the locals won't just take the naive german idealists in and use the technology to exploit their neighbors?) I can't really see how the VSVR, after the anarchist victory in the recent crises, would go about establishing an empire by force. A few idealists seeing Africa as the blank slate upon which they could establish a stateless socialist paradise without firing a shot doesn't sound that far fetched. Maybe one of the leaders holds sway with a wealthy union and it's members vote to fund their noble experiment or pressure the government into providing the funds. Perhaps the drydock workers union, since they'd be the most obvious beneficiaries.

Might you give us a map of Africa's current political state so we can offer suggestions or vote on where we think logical places to send the noble mission to?

Anti-imperialism and national liberation was indeed driving forces behind the socialist/communist movements of our Africa, but a lot of the African socialist and pan-africanist leaders had their own versions of socialism interpreted through African traditions, building upon the tradition of communal tribal villages and concepts like Ubuntu.
