Playing Flanders, working on taking King of France title from within. Finally got to the point where the opportunity came and DOW on my Liege. After a 2 year civil war (involving our holdings in the middle-east and Spain), i finally capture the last of his demesne. I was really close to capturing the last of his count vassals, so i waited a few days to finish it up. (Was worrying about rep at that point, which turned out not to be necessary).

One of my child-Count vassals (Blois), had also declared war on the King of France. I thought it strange, but never worried about it. By the end, that vassal's army of 115 men was floating about France.

After France's last vassal fell, i went up to do a peace treaty and get my King Title. But the King's emblem wasn't at Ile de France anymore. It was now at Blois. HUH? The former King was now the Count of Ile de France, still with his former personal demesne (most of which, i didn't have a claim on - so more BB to claim the rest).

Turned out, that backstabbing child-count of mine, also had a claim on the title of King of France, and in those few days between me controlling the last of France's demesne and doing a peace treaty, HE had done his own peace deal and claimed the Title. And he was NOW MY ALLY! roflmao

So there i am, after settling with the former King, with no King Title, a gazillion Duke Titles ready to hand out, a personal demesne of 20 counties, an efficiency of 0, a massive BB rep and deep in debt.

So, lesson learned, don't get greedy, when the war can be finished, FINISH IT!! That BB rep i was digging myself into, was solved by handing out 12 count titles and then 15 Duke Titles. (Once i regrouped my armies and attacked/captured that one-county King of France).

And now for things to come, while handing out those Ducal titles, i forgot and gave that child-count of Blois, the Duke of Orleans title, which just so happens to also include the former King in Ile de France. And that kid once again has a claim on the King of France title... Oy Vey! Looks like an interesting future is in store for me. :)

S'true, best not to dawdle and give opportunistic little punks a chance to seize the goods. On the other hand it is often possible to do the same thing in the case where YOU are the lesser partner, a very useful and very nasty tactic. Essentially you declare war on someone and then hope for your lieges support finally jumping in at the last moment and sealing the deal.

I once got the entire Duchy of Flanders (sorry, but as a Dutchman, Flanders has to go first, you separatist bastards. ;) ) when the HRE decided to intervene.

Anyway. Get your realm back into shape and crush your child.

Or just murder all his relatives until he's the heir of your realm as well. Bit gamey though.

Oh yes...you have to be quick on the button if your enemy is at war with several rulers, they grab what they can as quickly as they can, they are especially fond of stealing that entire juicy treasure of indemnities you were going to get a few days or so before your enemy's last stand falls.

A good way to reduce the number of such tragedies is to set the game to pause when you finish a siege. That way no one has time to get a peace offer in before you unless of course you are not the one to take that last province.

Related stupidity - I was playing the duke of Brandenburg and my count of Altmark rebelled. I took him over and revassalized him quickly. I forgot that my liege was still at war with him. So imagine my surprise a few years later when I discovered that the count of Altmark was an Italian bishop I couldn't remember appointing, and the direct vassal of Heinrich von Franken.

I have developed a natural reflex for always hitting the spacebar whenever a siege is complete for just this reason, Im the only oprtunistic bastard allowed here:D

Oh, didn't know about the space-bar, i'm so used to using the pause button on my keyboard. But i have set the options/message settings to pause the game when sieges end. That's given me the opportunity to scoot over there and humiliate (err, i mean show my generosity) my enemies by vassalizing them. :)

I hate it when that happens. Its why I try to be rid of a liege asap.

im not a mod i dont have the power lol, i really really wish space bar paused this game tho, on topic, Getting rid of a Liege ASAP is the best thing i can usually do, however in my latest game as the leofricsons, i broke free with my brother, me as the duke of northumberland and ater a protracted struggle, (and a ill fated march on essex) i managed to secure myself as a vassal of scotland and ended up with just westmorland in a desperate bid not to get wiped off the face of earth, my ruler was beateified(sp?) and his son is now a heretic who has come within a hairs breadth of being excommed, i have lots of claims though.

May my ruler rest in peace with his -909 prestige..yep thats minus :D a pious man..but a crap one lol, moral of this story? dont start a war over a misguided sense of brotherly love.
