I am playing with Lenape at the moment, and I must say that it is quite successful. I have annexed Iroqouis, Cherokee, and colonized a lot. But, I can't get no cavalery or naval. Is there an explanation to that?

Yes, this is the so-called whiteman penalty, meant to reflect that there were no horses in America before the Europeans arive, and it also stunts technological development.

To get rid of it, interact with Europeans: fight wars, send traders, that sort of stuff.

Even if you can't beat them, why not just build a trade post that they will automatically take, declare war on them, have them take the trade post and then give them the TP and some cash for peace? Sure you lose a little money, but it will do wonders for whiteman. Even if that isn't enough to let you build cavalry, it will certainly help with research.

Ok. I've already sent some merchants to Europe, but perhaps not enough. I do have artilery. I've spent a good deal of money on land tech, based on history knowlegde I surmised that England would launch some attacks. I fought some pretty nasty wars against England, but I've had a great deal of luck, since France and England are fighting constantly. And tobacco is the backbone of my economy:)

But thanks for the help.

Tobacco, when made into cigars/cigarettes at least, is bad for your lungs but it actually helps economy to breathe. It is a very good backbone. You can also use cotton but there's the issue of such an economy being extremely helpful to England if they have colonized Africa - there are Slaves in Africa. Just keep interacting with europe. The more countries you know of the better as well as there is another penalty for isolated countries (which know of less than 19 other nations).
