Aside from the obvious advantages of removing the hardcode restrictions on marriage (giving modders more tools), an official implementation including adoption would be good for certain fundamentalist Christian heresies that expect celibacy of the devout. Some CK2 mods added an adoption mechanic for Cathars for that reason, for example.

Hey, I'm just a newbie modder and longtime lurker, but I thought I might as well voice my support of this too.

For those worrying it might lead to an early game over, the same could be said about marrying an infertile wife or husband yet the game lets you do that very easily. Part of the challenge comes from navigating these challenges in the game, and I think anyone willing to have their character marry the same sex is smart enough to realize that it might be hard to have a kid without some extra-marital tomfoolery going on.

Similarly with the worries about the AI killing their own dynasties, fertility is already some AI is supposed to take into account when setting up marriages. Of course that doesn't stop them from marrying women too old to have any children anyways. The AI already does a good job ending their dynasty without gay marriage, and I doubt adding it is going to cause the Capets to vanish from France. I dunno, these seem like small issues to stand in the way of, at least, removing the hard code limitations that prevent modders from making it possible themselves. Hopefully the dev team is at least made aware that this is something people want.

RE: gender I think content exploring gender roles and identities in medieval times would be extremely interesting be it official from PDX or modded.

I'm really interested to see how the CK3 dynastic dynamics would play out in a monosexual setting (all people can both impregnate, be impregnated, and self-impregnate). It would really change the dynastic interactions if you didn't need to marry to have children and if everyone is a potential spouse for everyone else.

Seriously, yeah. CK3 already allows for some very interesting explorations of the implications of different kinship structures on a feudal system based on inheritance - e.g. when you're playing a religion with full gender equality, polyamory and equal polygamy and after a while your realm ends up being a single vast, intermarried extended family with a spiderweb instead of a tree. It would be cool to see how removing or altering other kinship ideologies breaks the feudal system.

As a long time lurker - this might be my first time commenting on the forums after many many years, I'm not really sure how long has passed :) - I just want to say that this thread has my full support. CK II, and now CK 3, has always been about making the world your own. There is really no reason why people should be locked out of the option of modding something as fundamental as simple relationships between two people.

I also have a question for the thread, and I do really apologize for two things - 1) if my search skills have failed me and 2) if I am going off topic. I seem to recall reading in this thread a fascinating mention about the possibility of orthodox (christian) same sex relations between historical figures - including saints. This was quite a new thing for me and I bookmarked this page in hope of researching it latter on. However, I can't seem to find that post at the moment. Would anyone be kind enough to send me the wikipedia link regarding this topic?

Thank you so much @WaffleIroner , that was the topic :) I remember specifically being interested in "The Tradition of Homophobia: Responses to Same-Sex Relationships in Serbian Orthodoxy from the Nineteenth Century to the Present Day " by Nik Jovic-Sas as a reference and the dismantlement of the Serbian myth of homosexuality as "western influence". Thank you again :)

So, I have exciting news in regards to adoption! There's already an interaction in the game to select which of your children you want to be your heir, and toying with it I was able to easily modify it into an option to add a character to your dynasty as your heir. They appear as a disconnected node in your dynasty tree though, it's no set_parent, but it allows for a painless transition to someone completely unrelated to you by blood!

No heir, no one else in the Dynasty tree:

A suitable heir (at the moment everyone that isn't you or your current heir):

From unlanded lowborn to heir, and Dynasty member (this is a forced event atm, ai characters can't deny becoming heir and it has no consequences):

I still can't believe how easy it was to make this, it caught me by absolute surprise when it actually worked lol. I might have to polish it a little so that it feels like an actual game choice with it's own modifiers and consequences and upload it, if they don't beat me to it :)

That's awesome! Can you please upload this mod to the steam workshop? This would actually be very useful when playing as heirless rulers.

While that's an important step, it has been done before already. It looks similar to how the 'Embrace' interaction in the Princes of Darkness mod (Embrace means turn them into a vampire) works. If you're male, it adds the mortal to your house (dynasty) and makes them your child. If you're female, however, it adds them to your house and does NOT make them your child since modders still can't access those scripts. One of which is mentioned in the OP.

For simple adoptions, your mod works perfectly fine. Does your adopted heir also get your bloodline buffs?

Wow, I had no idea! By OP's post I mistakenly thought the set_father interaction wasn't possible at all at the moment. I hadn't tried Prince of Darkness before, and downloaded it now I'm amazed at the amount of work in there. Studying it now a little, as the embrace interaction is a bit more complicated than I can yet understand. Lots I can learn from them!

Still, the option to do this as a female character is needed.

Bloodline buffs, like dynasty legacies? Those do work. I just tested it by getting a few, then after I adopted/heired someone and abdicated: Vibrant Court was there for them. Now I wonder if your "embraced" children get the family diplomacy tree perks...

Absolute bare-bones right now, will polish further later, but to share it asap: I just uploaded it to both here and the Steam Workshop. Goes by the name of "Dynastic Liberties".

I might not have been clear enough in the OP. set_father does exist, but is gender locked, while set_mother does not exist right now. Prince of Darkness currently uses set_father when a male vampire creates a new vampire "childe", but obviously can't use set_mother. I believe the Prince of Darkness modders had separately asked for set_mother to be included for this reason. I think the Prince of Darkness modders had pre-release access, so it's possible we will see a (gender locked) set_mother added in the next patch, as that may have already been requested and implemented for that patch before this thread was even posted.

Hmm, I understand. Any guess on why would effects be this gender-reliant?

With patch 1.1 we have set_mother!

A step forward! Reading that change made me really happy. Time to uncomment the references to set_mother in my mod to update when 1.1 releases!

Getting through the ~ m a s s i v e ~ patch notes now trying to find if there's any mention of changes to (the impossibility of) gay marriage, or other gendered effects.

Looking at every instance of the string "marr", it doesn't look like it.

No, I do not see any features related to the OP outside of set_mother, which is likely to be gender locked. This was fairly expected, for reasons I've mentioned before. I will be much more interested in seeing the patch notes for the patch after this, which will be much more telling on if the developers are agreeable to the features in the OP.

So does the addition of `set_mother` only make lesbian marriage possible, and not gay marriage?
I'm still learning how to mod this game, so I'm not sure I understand the full ramifications of this change .///.

edit: pregnancies, I mean, not marraige.
