Hi Folks,

Quick question, does Paradox have something in place to prevent EA/Maxis from suing Paradox Interactive for copyright infringement since EA/Maxis have a monopoly on the genre and Cities:Skylines and Simcity 2013 have similarities across multiple layers(UI, design style etc)? I would hate to buy Cities:Skylines and then have EA/Maxis ruin it by suing Paradox and stealing the game or preventing any future expansions/DLC from being released.

Erm... you know other games exist in this genre right? Take Focus Entertainments rather amusing excuse for a game Cities XL (also known as Cities XL 11, Cities XL 12, Cities XL Platinum and Cities XXL - they're all the rebrands of the original)

Imagine all the lawsuits in the FPS market if this was the case. It will be sueing left right and centre.

If I was simcity 2013 I would sue EA Maxis for abuse cruelty and neglect.

1. Monopolies are technically illegal, not encouraged. You can't get sued by someone for starting an alternative to their service. 2. There is no copyright infringement whatsoever here, no trademarks or copyrighted material was used from EA. They didn't use any assets from EA. You can't sue someone for copyright infringement just because they made something similar to what you did. 3. Let them sue, there's no way they'd win a case anyway I believe even if they were suing for something other than copyright infringement (I don't know exactly what they'd be suing for but maybe someone else does).

The only thing that should've been illegal is for EA/Maxis to release crap and charge $90 for it...

CSL is $40...woohoo,

half the price and looks like twice as fun

by this logic every ww2 flight simulator should be suing the other, they are all basically the same.

Maybe if Dynamix or Sierra were still around they could say they invented ww2 flight sims, for their ACES collection in the early 90s.

HAD a monopoly on the genre =)

But in all seriousness, the Simcity series has provided us with inspiration, but we don't copy. You can be assured that we will continue to support Cities: Skylines

EA wouldn't dare. They already made enemies of the fans with SCS and then SC2013. To sue the one company who actually did the job they were suppose to do at least 5 years ago is not going to add to their PR. I think a little crowd funding effort to support Paradox in any legal action will quickly squash any weasel moves that EA might attempt.

Besides, I believe there is a time limit on copyright. SC4 has been out for more than 10 years now, I'm sure the copy right on that game has all but expired by now. (I know this is the case for Star Control 2, and the community completely took over that game.)

No worries. Someone had to remind EA how it's done!

If every rich company would sue every small company that made their product look like amateurism there wouldn't be enough lawyers.

Being creative, making games interesting, it's almost as if these terms look illegal to some people because there is so much crap spoonfed to people by the big publishers. Without passion projects like Cities:Skylines I would not play games anymore and I'd protect children from choosing games where the hardest part of the game is creating your account.

Let's be honest - the interfaces are quite similar. The interface on Simcity wasn't the problem - it's still a very pretty game, regardless of how well it plays. It was the engine design and lack of giving and care about the fanbase actually wanted to see and how it all worked together that sunk it.

Its more likely that EA buys Paradox rather than suing them.

If EA were to actually acquire Paradox(which in of itself is extremely unlikely) they'd get infinite comets and destroyed by the en-masse armies of actual Paradox fans

also its weird seeing so many icon-less posters on this forum, though its a good indicator of who is a paradox game player vs people here just for Cities: Skylines
