Legacy of the Habsburgs
A European Political Game 1560
IRC Channel: #Habsburgs
People are always welcome to take spots that are not filled!
Charles V is dead. The most powerful ruler in Europe since Charlemagne has passed. His brother Ferdinand controls his Austrian lands, while his powerful son Phillip controls the most powerful Empire in Europe from his father, including Spain, Burgundy, the Netherlands and Naples.

However, troubles arise all over the continent. While the Princes of the Catholic Church discuss the Reformation at Trent, Protestantism is sweeping not only the Empire but all of Europe. While the Empire have temporarily been settled with the Peace of Augsburg tensions rise in France as war over religion looms in the horizon as the very young sons of Henry II reign. England has become Protestant, and Queen Elizabeth reigns unmarried on the throne of it. The Ottomans are pressing northwest, further into the heart of Europe. Meanwhile both Spain and Portugal seek for riches in distant continents. Who can survive this turbulent time of both religion and politics, and keep or establish dominance of Europe?

"I speak Spainish to God, French to men, Italian to women, and German to my horse." ~Charles V

Overview:

Welcome to Legacy of the Habsburgs! This game focuses on the time in Europe following Charles' V death, focusing mainly on Spain, England and France, however . Each player may take control of a country, and submit orders each turn in order to advance militarily, culturally, economically, etc. This game will mostly follow history, but it can and will break off by your decisions and outcomes- maybe the Spainish Armada will succeed, maybe Sweden will conquer Sicily, it is up to you. Besides main orders, there will be events where countries will need to respond with more orders or IC.

Several Rules:

1)Be kind and courteous OOC.
2)Please IC and send orders at least every two turns. If you are Spain, France or England, you will need to send orders and have IC every turn.
3) The GM has final word in game matters.
4)Most importantly, have fun!

If you have any questions, ask!

IRC:

To discuss game and other things, come to http://www.coldfront.net/tiramisu/, choose a nickname (please do not impersonate someone else), than type in the bottom text box /join #Habsburgs

How to Play:

Each player will be the ruler of a political state or group. Every turn(set by deadlines) every player should send orders to manage their state and affairs and go whichever way they do. Whatever you do with your state is up to you. Sending IC(in character scenes) is recommended, such as scenes between the ruler and his court, writing letters to another ruler, etc, then posting it on the main forum. It is encouraged because it adds flavor to the game in between the updates, and makes it more fun. Many people sometimes work jointly on an IC.

Orders:

Every turn the players will send an order(s) to do something, economically, socially, etc. Spain will have three orders, England and France and the Emperor will have two orders, while everyone else will receive one, excluding events made by the GM, which extra order or IC response will be allowed. After a formal declaration of war, the involved nations will receive an extra order for that war, one for each wars. Orders should be detailed yet concise.

Events:

Appearing sporadically, certain nations will be pressed with events, which they will either have to respond via IC, or receive an extra order to address. This extra order cannot be used for anything besides the event

800px-Russian_atrocities_in_Livonia_ib_XVI_century.jpg

German Engraving of Russian Atrocities in Livonia
The Livonian War
The once economically rich Old Livonia was split into a Confederation of several states. In 1558, Russia, seeking to gain more land, began a series of military excursions into the territory, quickly establishing dominance over the region. The declining Livonian Order was not as it once was, as any unsupported military engagement with the Russians would result in defeat. The Polish King and Lithuanian Grand Duke Sigismund II Augustus was wary of Russian expansionist aspirations. Expansion of Russia into Livonia would have meant not only a stronger political rival but also loss of lucrative trade routes. In June 1559, the estates of Livonia came under Polish–Lithuanian protection through the first Treaty of Vilnius. In January 1560, Sigismund sent ambassador Martin Volodkov to the court of Ivan in Moscow in an attempt to stop the Russian cavalry rampaging through rural Livonia.

As the King waits for a response, tensions run high. Who will establish dominance over Livonia? What will the future be?

((Event for Russia and Poland. Russia must IC a response or remain silent, on which the Polish King should act upon IC. Should either party begin war(which does not cost an order, just make an official declaration of war), both sides will get another order for the war.

Denmark and Sweden also may want to get involved for their own interests. Other people are allowed to IC their opinions, letters etc. On any topic, not just this one. Deadline for orders next week))

To my Brother in Christ King Sigismund II of Poland,

It is my dearest hope to prevent the current punishment of the Livonian confederates escalating into a war between myself and you Brother. Your actions in supporting and abetting the illegal actions of the confederates in breaking my covenant with them of 1554 with your detestable agreements of Pozvol and Vilnius prevent any stabilisation of the situation and merely postpones the righteous punishment of the confederate states but does not dim my ardour for doing so.

To this end I am proposing that we create a settlement that punishes the confederates for their betrayals and creates a stable situation for the parties that have interests in the current crisis. These parties being ourselves and our brothers the Emperor and the Kings of Sweden and Denmark-Norway.

I reiterate that the Tsar of All Russia is your friend and brother king who merely wishes that an unproductive war such as this one only benefits our true enemy, the Sublime Porte rather than either of us. I am sure that your actions have only been caused by poor advice from your councillors and the lies of the confederate leaders rather than any true malice on your part.

Your Brother in Christ,

Mary of Guise
The Scottish Issue

Things have been taking a turn for the worse in Scotland. Queen Mary of Guise's regency was going well, but several years prior, the growing number of Protestants began to trouble the Monarchy. She had tolerated them, but they were concerned about her ties with the French. She married her daughter, Mary, to the dauphin of France in 1558. In 1557, a group of Scottish lords who became known as the "Lords of the Congregation", worked to promote Protestant causes in the realm. Queen Elizabeth of England secretly supported the group, and major cases of iconoclasm broke throughout the country in the next two years. In 1559, Fearing disorder and now determined by circumstance to show less tolerance, the Regent summoned the reformed preachers to appear before her at Stirling. Insurrection followed. A mob sacked religious houses, including the tomb of James I in Perth. In response, the Regent marched on Perth, but was forced to withdraw and negotiate when another reformed contingent arrived from the west. Though suffering initial losses, Mary of Guise was soon reinforced by professional French Mercenary troops. The rebels were driven back and fighting continued, and all seemed lost for the Protestant side until an English fleet arrived in January 1560, which caused the French to retreat. Negotiations with England then began with the rebels, and the resulting Treaty of Berwick in February was an agreement between the rebels and the English to act jointly to expel the French. With the French holed up in the town of Leith, what will become of Scotland? Will the English or French determine the fate of Scotland?

((Event for France and England. France controls the mercenaries and Scottish Royal Forces, making 3 units of infantry, 1 unit of musketmen, with Royal forces of 3 infantry units,1 unit of cavalry, and an artillery-manned fort at Leith. England has 5 units of infantry, and 1 unit of artillery in Scotland, and the armed rebels number about 3,000. War is not officially declared by France, though France may declare war, in which case France gets an extra order. Even if France does not declare war, England will still receive an extra order. Depending on what happens I may open up Scotland to be playable.

Poland still needs to respond to Russia's letter about the Livonian War. But so far this is good guys!))

To Ivan, Tsar of All Rus

As tensions are rising in Livonia, I must ask for peace in the region. The Livonians are traitors, I have no doubt about that. The Danes are not afraid to show millitary force in the region. On another matter, the Norgwegians have asked the king for more furs. I intend to answer them. I will sent an ambassator to Moscow to negotiate.

Ivan IV Vasilyevich, Tsar of Russia

The Livonian Confederates require peace and security, and they feel that Russia threatens that, which is precisely why they wanted a treaty of friendship with Poland. So far, you have only proven them right. I do not wish for war. I wish for peace, as you say you do. Let us talk as true men of God, and let us find find compromise somewhere.

Sigismund II Augustus, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania

((Sorry my response is late.))
