Balkan Front: January 13th - April 4th 1943
Part 2
It had been a loss, but the loss at Craiova brought something good with it. Being forced to lead two heavily intense battles to defend the city of Craiova, Rommel had sent a request for reinforcements from Bucharest prior to the Fourth Battle of Craiova. Reconnaissance showed that almost all Panzer divisions had left the city for Craiova and this proved to be an excellent oppertunity to perhaps finally seize the Romanian capital.
Air reconnaissance reveals the weak defence of Bucharest
Using this apparent weakness, Pangalos attackes the region from the south while Pitsikas attackes from Constanta. In truth, the battle goes were well and Roman troops finally enters the suburbs of the city of Bucharest. As the battle progresses into urban warfare, the only real threat soon turned out to be the single German Panzer division under the personal command of Field Marshal Kesselring, the leader in command of Bucharest. It was perhaps these tanks that made the battle for the city to last over three days. But the victory went to the Roman Army and Kesselring left the city.
Victory at Bucharest lasting March 6th - March 9th
With the victory at Bucharest, Roman troops began to secure the city and it's neighbouring areas. The Air Force managed to locate the remains of the escaped Panzer division in Pitesti were it was bombed and completely destroyed.
Even though Kesselring survived the attack, his panzers did not
As the Romans won the first Battle of Bucharest, Hitler decides to replace Rommel at Craiova with General List and then orders Rommel to defend Bucharest before the Romans can establish a secure point in the city. However, the effect of the bombings is felt for both sides. The lack of functional roads makes it hard for the Roman Army move troops into the city and when Rommel approches from the west with his forces, the Roman Army haven't managed to secure half the city yet. But Roman troops are deeply entrenched within the city and on the countryside and are determined not to let the Balkan Lion get another victory in his pocket. During the chaotic battle, Field Marshal Pitsikas finally defeats the Balkan Lion and Rommel is forced to leave.
Not this time Rommel. You won't win this time!
Seeking to help Bucharest out, Field Marshal Rundstedt attacks Pitsikas at Constanta but is unable to defeat him.
With the defeat of Rommel, Bucharest is safetly secured on March 22nd 1943. But List, the commander of Craiova, hears of Rommel's defeat and attacks the frontier troops of the Roman Army which he easily defeat.
Bucharest, the capital of Romania rest in Roman hands but List waits around the corner...
Having finally captured the city, the Imperial Army will not allow it to return to Axis hands, not now. General Brahnos launches a counter-attack at Craiova along with Demestichas but even though it fails in it's attempt of defeating List, the disorganisation is large on the German side. When a second attack is launched a week later, the battle tips in Roman favour and List is forced to retreat. Bucharest is safe.
With List defeated, Roman troops moves north and easily captures the city of Ploesti and it's important oilfields. This is the final straw for the Romanian nation.
Ploesti falls and with it, Romania
With Bucharest and Ploesti under Roman control, Romania finally collapses after have enduring two years of some of the worst kind of suffering ever created. The entire southern portion of the nation lies in shambles. Even though most of the industry works, the infrastructure is a mess and thousand tons of material have been lost or destroyed. The collapse begins when King Mihail arrests Ion Antonescu in Pitesti for treason against King and Country while Horia Sima manages to escape to Germany. Shortly afterwards, Mihail contacts General Brahnos to meet him in Bucharest to sign the capitulation papers. On April 2nd 1943, Romania accepts the unconditional surrender and places itself under Roman juristiction until the war is over.
The Romanian Kingdom surrenders to the Roman Empire on April 2nd 1943
With the surrender, Rundstedt suddenly finds himself cut off from the rest of the Army in Tulcea. Pitsikas tries to take advantage of his confusion and attackes him on April 3rd, but fails as Rundstedt's forces have prepared defences there since the fall of Constanta months ago.
