so i have a nice city loads of metros i decide to put in a nice one way system and put my trams on in problem thought is that i wish to put my stops on the left hand side (the quietest bit of the road) but this seems impossible? whyyy

Probably because you don't want passengers to have to risk their lives by having to cross the rightmost lane to get to the halted tram ;)
Funnily enough about 50% of tram stops in Berlin do exactly that. There is even a traffic law stating something like, if a tram is a stopped, you have to stop your car and let passengers enter and leave it before continuing your journey.

Other option (esp. on 1 ways) would be to let passengers enter from the left, most modern trams have doors on both sides.

Yeah I know, here in the Netherlands the same is true sometimes. The things is though that the game will probably not handle this very nicely, so you'll either have people being 'run over' by cars all the time because cars clip through them, or you'll have massive traffic jams due to cars having to stop for entering passengers all the time..
