Hi all,

I just started Victoria, I think this will be the type of game that I like. The learning curve seems about right and I'll have fun investing the time to learn this gaming system.

Any ideas on how a newbie should learn the system?

Or, what strategies will help me explore the gaming system?

Thanks,

Stink

Well something which you are bound to be references to over and over again is the VickyWiki. It's a useful guide for new players, as well as for veterans (even 'veterans' of this game don't suggest that they know all of the workings of this game - that's how complex it is!).

Also, I'd recommend starting out as either Belgium or Brazil, to begin with, purely for learning the basics. Uruguay is often suggested as it has few provinces to take care of, and thus allows you to concentrate on other more detailed aspects of this game.

Finally, I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing the Revolutions expansion pack. This expansion greatly enhances the gameplay, as well as adds more depth to an already brilliant game. There have been numerous threads praising the game and, even more so, the expansion.

Happy gaming!

I seem to be off to a slow start, not much to do but let the time pass. My factory production seems to be at a stalemate and my income is stagnant. I have most of the decisions regarding pops and exports/imports being handled by the computer. I've upped $ to education, lowered military my expense and tried higher and lower tax rates with not much of a noticeable result.

But, all in all the game is growing on me, just wish I knew all the ins and outs.

What version of the game are you playing? Did you get the expansion Revolutions? If you didn't, I heartily recommend you do.:)

Don't let the computer handle trade. It doesn't do a good job and most of all can't predict what you need.

Early in the game most factories aren't very profitable. The ones that do make a profit are the most basic ones, like steel, lumber and fabric. Furthermore, if you have a higher level factory (for example furniture) and you have to import lumber to keep it running, it's most likely running at a defecit.
Education is your most important expenditure, so unless you're in real trouble keep it as high as you possibly can.

I have not gotten the expansion yet, maybe next pay check if the wife is happy. Which she should be since gaming keeps me around the house which is always a good thing since I can help with kids while conquering the world!

I'll try and jack with my trade; I think thats a good start for mastering global domination skills.

A good introduction to the important economic aspects of the game you can find in OHgamer's AAR Power By Production 2.0.

Although he plays this game with Revolutions and the VIP-MOD installed, the basics should be the same. However, Prussia (like in that AAR) as a starting country might be a bit too much to start with, since you'll face a lot of country-specific events. Try an easier one, as Talquin recommends, and you should be fine...
