So far my first 1.8 game is going pretty well, and this patch and DLC really do improve the game one hell of a lot.
The Religious League mechanic is also a brilliant one, one that adds a huge amount of historical dynamism and flavour to the game. However, from what I've seen, a few tweaks need to be made to it, namely

1) The protestant league seems to declare even when outgunned; in my game I saw a Protestant league of GB, a crippled and debt-ridden France, Switzerland, Brandenburg, Denmark and three OPMS declare on a Catholic league of Austria, Muscovy, Ottomans, Naples (owning most of Italy and half the Balkans), a huge PLC, Portugal, Castile, Milan, Aragón, and about half of the HRE states, including almost all of the ones over three provinces. Needless to say, they got crushed.

2) Why can the ENTIRE defending league call in their allies? I assume this is some sort of a bug, because it makes things even more ridiculous. Thanks to this, Ottomans were able to call me (Songhai with significant colonial empire, all of West and half of North Africa), and a large Persia, and between them Mainz and Palatinate pulled in nearly all of the HRE, including Bohemia and Bavaria, both protestant. This made the war even more laughably one-sided.

As soon as these things are fixed, this mechanic will be absolutely perfect!
Has anyone else experienced this silliness?

In my 3 tests the league wars were all very balanced, but I noticed in one when the league leaders were weak states there was lots of call to war for external powers, which i think is pretty ok as long as it's balanced.

So so far I did not experience what you're stating.

The attacking league can call in their allies as well. I had a VERY balanced league war, I was not initially involved in any leagues as, at first, I had a truce with the Emperor and later was busy with my own war with Poland & Lithuania (playing Brandenburg > Prussia), but then the league war broke out suddenly and my ally Burgundy (which was Catholic, but joined the Protestants), from the attacking side, called me in. The forces were sort of balanced (Protestants had a few ten thousand advantage, I think, since I was called in & it was Burgundy with their #1 land army on the Protestant side).

I think it's just the well-known randomness factor of EU4 and I think it's reasonable, to some extent. Only logical if in some playthroughs the league war has one side completely crushed, although the first point seems to make sense. I am also confused about how the leader is chosen (first nation to join?), because Norway and Saxony (well, Saxony was the emperor, so that makes sense) leading huge alliances of world's most powerful great and minor powers is weird and they wouldn't have such influence over the bigger participants.

The Ottomans? Shouldn't the leagues at least be limited to Christian States like the HRE itself? On the occasions where League members are allied to non-Christians and call them in that's fine(though I agree that every defending league member shouldn't be able to call in their allies), but Muslims joining a League based on Christian doctrinal disputes in the Holy Roman Empire seems a little absurd.

Yeah need some more experience on this, Frankly the one league war I witnessed was rather silly because for some reason despite rivaling both Spain and Austria France still fought along side them for the Catholic side, There was of course the interesting and historic eastern front where the Golden Horde and Muscovy fought to the death over HRE internal politics and for some reason despite slow grinding down and forcing out must Protestant members Austria didn't end up enforcing religious unity they just took some of England's money instead and made them release nations.

The Otomans did support the protestants, I see nothing wrong with that. It's plausible history not exact history.
