Steele - as well as the Krupp guns the Germans also used Skoda 305mm artillery against the Belgian fortresses.

Allenby - I'd give Makhno 3 or 4 skill; he was supposedly a military genius who fought off much stronger armies for many years.

Regarding Conrad, I've seen the following description of him: "Although once described as Central Europe's greatest soldier, he actually never won a single major campaign."

actually it was mostly the Skóda guns who destroyed the belgian fortresses because the krupps werent as big as the skodas

Conrad was definately, together with Foch the true military leaders of the great war.
ludendorff, hindenburg, haig and the others were not much more than executives whereas the genius of the planning behind were foch and conrad.
you can check that up in several war archives if you look at the operational planning

conrad did not fail because his plans were not good but because his enemies were too strong and his troops too weak

His troops too weak and the enemy too strong.

And a good plan would take into account military realities, and realising these facts, defensive war should be the best option.

If my army numbers 1000 and is made of crap troops, versus the enemy army of 10000000 (which model the conditions you mentioned), and my plan is ATTACK, I fail to see how these can be termed "good plans".

Foch planning Haig's work? I'll leave that to Allenby.

Conrad planning Ludendorff's work? Was he at Tannenburg? Or in the OHL planning Stormtrooper tactics?

i think you missed the point of an alliance

about the planning:
read some war-diarys of staff officers in all armies b4 talking.
if you base your ww1 information on simple literature mostly by english and american writers (and even so-called historians...yeh yeh, the winner writes the history) you shouldnt give your opinion on these points...

The same Conrad who presided over an army that suffered 957,000 casualties in four months in 1914...

If the battle of Gorlice-Tarnow is famous any victorious commander, then it is August von Mackensen, not Conrad. For Caporetto, the same can be said for Otto von Below.

I don't quite know what the terms 'executive' means in relation to high command and planning, but as far as Foch goes, as Supreme Allied Commander, his job was less in the planning of details, but more as a symbol of Allied unity in a time of adversity (the Germans nearly reached Amiens in 1918), as well as for the coordination and deployment of troops. Therefore, the credit for those victories can be given mostly to his subordinates army commanders (Haig and Pershing included)

Surely greatness in command is measured in results, not theoreticals concerning strength and quality, nor war diaries either?

The German artillery in Belgium had 29 Krupp 42cm howitzers, firing a 2,052 pound shell 15,500 yards, and 6 Skoda 42.5cm howitzers, firing a 1,700 pound shell 13,100 yards. The Krupp guns were more numerous and fired bigger ordinance, and were mostly responsible for the damage wrought.

Conrad was certainly a notable commander, but he was not in the same league as was Haig and Ludendorff.

So we should only use sources from German and Austrian writers? Clearly the best way to go about this...

Leader emergency #2

In the light of KB's absense, we need German, French, Italian, Japanese and Russian leader lists as well. I doubt I'll be able to write them all myself, as well.

That goes alongside the difficulty of making leaders appear in the first place :(

I didn't "get" Soviet leaders to appear in the sense of doing anything positive - it's simply that leaders from the default WW2 soviet leader file (which I hadn't deleted from the leaders directory) appeared. It's possibly significant that SOV was created by event rather than being in the game from the start.

I've also tried, without success, to get leaders into the game. They don't appear on the select/promote leader menu, and writing them into the country.inc file doesn't work either.

I can't find any configuration file that mentions leader files.

I don't suppose it has anything to do with the unlimited time patch?

I wouldn't know...does the unlimited time patch restrict the use of leaders?

We'll have to ask someone who knows about these things.

I remember something from the MDS (maybe?) about needing all the files, or none of them would appear.

Maybe if we try making a bunch of blank files until we have them all filled in, that might do the trick.

Let's hope that works - it'll have to be tried as soon as possible.

Splendid news everyone! Michael's emailed me his leader lists, and I shall be completing them in the coming week as well as finding photographs.

Naturally, our work in this area will come to nothing unless we manage to leaders to appear in game...perhaps following the suggestion that by slinging all the leader files possible in the folder, that something will come up?

Is one of those the Russian list? If so, would you possibly send it to me so I can put it together with the pictures from MRAKoris...

Certainly - it needs a bit of tidying first though....and a few more names I'd suspect.

I also have some pictures, too - so I'll send them to you, and you can give us the final version.

If you are going to send me pictures, you'll need to send them to a different address. My hotmail account will fill up faster than you can say "Makhnovshchina." ;)

EDIT: Forgot to put up the new address. ;)

Russian leaders list - I've expanded it by about 4/5 times thanks to the trusty WWI Databook.

Hi chaps,

Sorry for letting tyhe side down a bit in the past couple of months. Anyway, Allenby's got all the scripted stuff although I still have a handful of French and Itallian pictures which need topping & tailing. Any takers?
