Similar thing happened to me. Could be just random chance, but as Date I had a clan leader die reasonably quickly, his son (a leper) took over and ruled for 30 years without an heir. I had him commit sepuku (experimenting with ordering a vassal who didn't like me to give up his titles had destroyed his honor) so his brother could take over the clan. But then in a period of about 3 years the leper's brother randomly died (age 47) and then HIS son the new heir died (age 20). Each time I got a new court, had to restart project build times, and had reduced vassals. It would be great if they would add the blood drop back to characters so I could see who the hell is in my dynasty.

It was all just so random. "Hey now you're no longer clan leader. Also, this other guy died, so now you're no longer daimyo."

And super frustrating because all the while the ostensible clan leader was letting the Uesugi dig into the Nanbu up north, where I was set for expansion before the chain of death destroyed my family.

Maybe realistic, but good lord...

I dunno how random it is... You ordered your clan leader with no sons and a single brother to commit suicide. Then the brother and his son happened to die in quick succession. That sounds purely like bad planning on your part. Were the brother and nephew married to 4 women each? If not then that might explain your lack of eleigble sons.

Welcome to the wonderful world of RNG (combined with hidden health-stat). I've got delicious heir ready to become the clan leader but his old man just doesn't die. He's nearing his sixties now and he's leper to boot which further reduces health so he should be kicking the bucket any day now but he just insists on staying alive.
Its funny you say that because I had a leper as well who took forever to die. Maybe there is some bug that makes the leper add a positive rather than a negative to health.

Ture, the core game is great, but so far the characters are just a bunch of stats. There's no CK like connection with them where you follow your children grow and how your ruler develops new traits though events in his life. Now there's just a random ruler event here and then.

Agreed. Isn't this really a follow through from EU:Rome and not CK? EU:Rome felt bare too.

Anyway on deaths: my guy kept surviving but his sons kept dying. So I'd have to remarry my daughter in-laws and make them give me new sons.

EU:R had a little more history associated with the characters. I've been checking the save game files and Sengoku looks like they did away with saving the history. It was amusing to follow the historical path of your folk and watched as they hit events that shaped their lives. Unfortunately the event > history system lead to some pretty bad save game bloat especially when you had characters going through a promote/demote loop cycle.

As for the Leper Prince, fertility is dropped by 90% as a Leper (health is only 30%). I definitely would've told him to knife himself much sooner.

I've been playing 1 of the smaller clans to learn the game. In my 1st 2 game starts the Clan leader died quickly in his mid 50's, his heir died in his late 40s. So I thought Id be smart & hold off on any building projects until the original Leader died to save them from being interrupted....the old bird lasted into his late 70s lol :p
