One aspect I liked about HOI3 were the leader traits. I enjoyed assigning the right leaders to command units for specific tasks... and seeing those leaders gain experience and new traits through combat. Does anyone know if leader traits will be in HOI4? I see a basic skill rating but what about ability ratings for defense/ offence/ logistics etc...

Or is leadership another area that has been dumbed down? Along with no command hierarchy or OOB. After all , the game box does have Rommel, MacArthur, Montgomery etc... on it... so will leaders actually matter?

Yes, our command group leaders have traits. Things like "Armored Warfare Specialist" (made up example) etc. They are good at certain things. Guderian is good with tanks for example, I would imagine. I'm not sure if leaders can gain more traits through combat or not.

traits are still there. Leaders can gain/improve traits through combat and when they operate in certain terrains and climate zones.

"Desert Fox" if a general fights for some time in North Africa and I think it was named "Winter specialist" if a General operates in a harsh winter.

I wonder if they'll keep the Old Guard trait, I hated that one. But I agree that traits make a good difference in the game. I relocated all the officers with fortress buster to the western front as Germany and broke the Maginot line to pieces in HoI 3.

That's a relief to know that leader traits are still in... although that aspect could still be enhanced further... I never felt that HOI 3 really reflected the difference in INITIATIVE of the best generals. It's just a shame that my historically accurate generals will be in charge of "Blob A" and "Blob B". Why on earth did the developers remove historically realistic command hierarchy from the game?

I hated the micro connected to assigning the leaders of every division, corps, army, army group
Setting up Army Group center on the Eastern Front meant that I had to assign 48 officers! That means around 100-120 officers on the Eastern Front alone!

Traits are fine, but I like how it is now: You choose ONE general that leads a whole bunch of divisions, depending on his rank. That means in the end I might have to assign 5-20 officers on the Eastern Front, and that is OK I think.

You could let the AI automatically assign leaders for you if you didn't want to micro manage them. Leadership was so key to Germany's early success in the war that I think it is very important to represent the command structure accurately in the game. All that time spent "setting up" an OOB paid off once the invasion began... and it can save time later... knowing that a certain corps under a specific commander will be good for say 'fortress busting' or 'spear heading a blitz'... or 'holding the line'. It can also make finding a particular unit much quicker in the game... when I know that I need to look in Army Group Center to find it. In HOI 4 you are going to have hundreds of divisions for the major powers... all organised loosely under vague command groups... I don't see how that makes it any easier. In fact, it sounds like an organisational night mare. Why are players happy to micro manage division composition down to individual support elements but not be particularly bothered who leads them?

Ultimately I guess some players care more about historical realism than others... its a personal preference... not meant as a criticism.. but it ruins immersion for me to know that I will no longer have Divisions/Corps/Armies/Army Groups in a realistic command structure.

Ultimately I guess some players care more about historical realism than others... its a personal preference... not meant as a criticism.. but it ruins immersion for me to know that I will no longer have Divisions/Corps/Armies/Army Groups in a realistic command structure.

Oh I'd like to have corps ect again as well, but without having to give every division and corps a leader. Why not just introducing a leaderless corps-level in the already existing combat groups? So it would be: division => corps => combat group => theatre. A leader is only assigned to the combat group. We get a near realistic and clearly structured OOB without the micro management hell that was the leadership-system.

Well perhaps you could add a small structure underneath the theatre commander. To represent the level of organisation needed in that sector, so as troops are added you unlock another sub-commander.

But I am still wondering if they are actually generated ones (with randomly generated names, traits, rank, and probably a sort of portrait) or if they are just taken from a limited premade list like in HoI3, and not actually generated.

I think they are actual commanders, I am not sure if you get a list to pick from or if it is a random selection from that list.

However I expect to see Model, Guderian and Rommel getting big promotions early for most german players.
