From the FAQ:

Colonisation
Colonisation in Victoria is all about laying claims to the vast lands not controlled by the industrialized nations. Claims can be contested, and will sometimes lead to war. Explorers can be sent to areas to map out the white spots on the map, and will discover new resources for the empire. Colonists are moving from overpopulated countries in the old world, to the most free and prosperous colonies and new nations,

How exactly will claims be laid? Does this mean you will have claimed territories such as in HOI and EUII? Will you get them through events, or will you be able to claim provinces yourself, perhaps by influencing those areas alot.

What do you think? :)

Also it sounds as if the colonisation process will be less hands-on business than it is in EU2, how will that be handled. Will colonists just move from any country to the "best place", creating a melting pot of cultures and religions or will the travelling of colonists be limited to those of similar culture or religion (This is of course assuming that there will be some penalties applied to provinces if it differs from that of the homeland, like EU2).

I'd also like to know if colonisation will be restricted to some areas, like it was in EU2, or will they (Paradox) perhaps allow the populations of nations to emigrate to other nations. That is to populous regions, if the settings are better in their home countries.

I noted in the screen shot of Victoria that the provinces were very small. Maybe you have to have a certain percent explored/colinized to actually lay a claim in an area.

I dont think the HOI model is going to work in say africa and Australlia, sure there may be territorial claims in Europe, and the U.S. but those undiscovered areas there has to be some kind of a calculation based on land discovered. Otherwise every new province you dicover could have a claim on it by anyone, because I am guessing that just because you have a claim dosent mean someone else cant come along and lay claim as well.

How claims will be laid? I guess the old fashioned "raising a flag" on that spot might do.

I think so too. IMO this would essentially work with a small military expedition laying claims to distant lands not inhabited by Europeans.
Of course, most africans were most unpleasantly surprised by the arrival of European powers and tended to show this by stuffing them with arrows and spears.;)

Perhaps you would build a 'claim' unit and deploy it to a particular spot. I'd imagine there'd be varying ranks of 'claim'... the first person to set foot there, the first person to have an active settlement there, and best of all, the person with the 3rd Infantry Corps there!

My guess is you send a military expedition under an explorer to claim an area. I like the sound of the colonizing system, with population moving on its own. It should help with the "Colonize the world in 100 years" syndrome of Eu.

I like it better than if it was like EU2, too.

I like that idea. You go out claim the territory then the colonists go there by themselves =D how efficient!

So what happens if you claim a territory and I decide I would like to claim it for myself, and go an remove your "flag" and put up my own?

Sounds good to simply put up a flag, but you want to talk about fast colonization? be over in fast. I think the suggestion of a specific unit for colonization is a good idea, but claimed territory shouldnt be an automatic, there should be room for disputes, diplomacy and war over the territory in dispute.

Im looking forward to this part of the game a lot, because its really got the potential to lead to some international incidents particularly in MP.

Good morning! And thank you for so many replies everyone. Very interesting ideas here. :)

I have this kind of idea:

The explorers that the FAQ speaks of is for perhaps exploring new regions and finding new resources and provinces perhaps.

I have thought perhaps the player could lay claim to territories he desires by colonizing them and/or perhaps influencing them. Perhaps for example, there is an area, and an industrial nation sends colonists there, and begins to build in it. This could increase a kind of influence for that nation over that region, therefore giving the player influence over it. Other ways to gain influence would be taking power in regional politics, and perhaps also occupying land with armies.

Now, if two industrial nations both take claim of an area, this would cause rivalry between those two nations, and could lead to lots of diplomacy and maybe eventually war.

Perhaps also then, I wonder if you could actually take full control of land after sending some colonists or armies? Perhaps they could only make claims to the land, but you would have to take more steps to really make these claims have effect. So, you would need to gain full influence or control over a territory to directly control it. If you and a rival nation both have claim to a region, then you would want to try to make your influence more dominant over the rival's.

To become more dominant, you could among other things, send overwhelming numbers of colonists, build more, and influence more, etc. Also, a war could break out over that land, and defeating your enemy and occupying the area during the war could drastically lower your rival's claim.
