Oh, contact support, I'm sure they'll be helpful to you and thousands of others.
I have read most of the threads which were posted in the Technical support forum during the last few days and the people there (mostly AndrewT) are very helpful and are able to solve most of the problems that the users have. I'm pretty sure that your rolled back version can be made to start(e.g. by starting eu4(.exe/.app) directly).
Many of the issues with the new version only happen in very specific circumstances which testing probably wouldn't have found.

General feedback for the new launcher

Its functionally worse than the previous one.

It uses more space to tell less. Activating mods for example.

Previously you had a small menu in which you could very efficiently activate mods one after another. You saw which ones were not compatible with current version. Only difference is that it did not tell was a mod a steam or a local one, but if it was compatible what did it matter. (Usually new patch means new save)

It also looks straight out from 2013. The flat, near metro-esque look gives me bad flashbacks of Windows 8/10. Steam already gave cloud saving, so login seems, pointless, beyond say moving over to a new computer but its not exactly once a day thing so feels like a moot point.

News. We also got those on the old launcher, they went one by one fairly quickly so again, no clear need for a new one. New one does not infact feel like it adds anything of value, only takes away from the old one.

In conclusion. At least in my own personal experience. The old launcher feels superior to the new one. It was incredibly functional (when compared to the new one), compact and fit the theme of the game overall very well.

Extra: Seeing Creative Assembly's launcher be superior to EU's, thats just sad. I mean, I want EU4 launcher to be good, been playing these since early 2010's but this. This was just completely unnecessary. If I had to guess there was technical debt but transferring that over to customers in terms of worse functionality is not a direction a studio such as paradox should create and lead project towards.

Almost all current games are moving to the launcher so I rather doubt it will be undone, I'm afraid. If you have any problem with it now please post in Tech Support.

Okay, so you're set on this launcher, got it. That's fine. However, would it not be a good olive branch opportunity to those who miss the old launcher to say in some PR announcement: "Hey all, we know the launcher is not perfect yet, but we are listening to feedback and working on making it better."? I don't get why you can't even publicly admit the launcher is not up to the standard many PC users would expect. I think doing this would go along way to restoring trust with the community, because at the moment, this seems like a very cynical move by Paradox.

Hey all, we know the launcher is not perfect yet, but we are listening to feedback and working on making it better!

There were already updates put out for it in EU4 and Prison Architect, FYI.

this seems like a very cynical move by Paradox.
In what way? I don't understand what is cynical about it?

I can't seem to update a thumbnail / picture for my mod in Steam. I added:
Code:
picture="mod_picture.png"
in my mod's .mod file and descriptor.mod file.

I also put the picture (256x256, .png) in the game's mod folder.

However, when I upload it to Steam, there is no thumbnail / picture. Did this change with 1.29? It used to work for me.

"One step forward, two steps back" should be the motto of EU4 now. Every new update brings a large number of good, needed features and much welcomed changes...and a boatload of unnecessary stuff that no one asked for.

This has been going on for the past year and a half, with Imperator and now with EU4. And then it needs another update the fix the things previous one broke, and usually comes many months later with DLCs.

This new launcher is a mess, and it worked in Imperator only because Imperator doesn't have many mods (and even then it has the same issue - no version compatibility alert, lots of empty unused space and scrolling, no alphabetical arrangement, takes up space with notifications of updates/DLC, Linux incompatibility etc.). Worse, it kills your mods if you play in offline mode like Stellaris does (and Total War launcher does). It may look fancy, but being fancy is not worth the host of problems and user-unfriendliness it brings.

What happened to actually testing things before releasing? I mean, this is basic beta-testing stuff that should've not been released on the main game update. What happened to not "fixing" things that were not broken before? I am kinda grateful that CK2 won't get any launcher update - it had its problems but is light years ahead in terms of usability when compared to this new one. Please don't touch the HoI4 launcher either - it needs tweaks but it works far better than this one ever will.

Thanks I'll stick with 1.28.3 and my backup mod folder until this new launcher is fixed/removed. :)

@Ruben_ Side question: are you a mod creator or user?

AS A USER (!!!): I had this too. Try a combination of a) and b) as i posted to people two postings above yours. Stated here again:

Unsub your mod. Delete ALL the files of the mod from workshop/content/gamenumberxxxxxxxxx/modnumberyyyyyyyy and ALSO from your documents/eu4/mods folder the .mod with the same number of the mod just deleted from documents.

Now relaunch the launcher. Does it still name your problematic mod anywhere? If not...it is finally gone(!)

...now you can resub. Check whether it has downloaded alright. if it has...

...restart the launcher. it will now acquire the new .mod file. the mod should now be listed and not flagged anymore (maybe another launcher restart, sometimes). and assuming it is correctly configured (supported_version="1.29.*.*"), there will also be no prompt when starting.

I deleted the entire mod folder, sub/resub didn't work.
Then I deleted the entire mod folder, sub/resub and restarted steam, that did the trick. Now it worked.

Really strange.

As most of us here paid around $200 for the game at this point, I suggest not using the word "free" at all. These are just regular updates of the product we already bought for a top tier price. We should expect (and demand) top tier aftersales support, not this garbage treating us as their "peasants".

This is business issue, not gameplay issue. If someone from Paradox upper management ever reads the forums, read this - this attitude is a bomb under your business' very foundation that will ruin it faster than you can say "peasants rabble".

1. Revert the faulty launcher to a working one immediately.
2. Descend from Olympus and apologize before customers.
3. In the future, never release anything that was not thoroughly tested by a team of testers on all platforms.

Well up to you.

the launcher does not show which mod is up to date with the current version of the game.
is this an issue on my end or is this wad for the new launcher?
because i really don't want to go through all my subscribed mods to see which one is up to date or not.

Updated to 1.29.2. Checksum e022 not e022 as others have already noted. Started Steam, still no EUIV. Started Steam from command line to see if it gives out any errors. EUIV started! Similar results on repeated attempts.

Does someone have an idea as to why my steam app fails to start EUIV launcher when I start steam from a panel shortcut, but starts it ok when I start steam from command line? Both have just "steam" as the executable, no parameters, no environmental variables set. I suppose it's some variable that exists in my command line environment, and should be set for the shortcut. Opensuse Leap 15.1, KDE. Like previously, setting LD_PRELOAD to launch options in steam does nothing.
