I have been playing Hearts of Iron IV for a number of years now and had not problems, however, suddenly today I get a virus alert saying that the launcher is infected with IDP.Generic and will be moved to the virus chest. Since then I have tried to connect to the game and the launcher will not connect, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game and still can not connect - need help urgently

I had this problem too yesterday. You're using Avast Free?
First, I'm 99% sure that it's a false positive. So no need to worry about an infection.
To fix the issue, go into Avast, click on "Protection" (left hand side) and then click on "Virus Chest" (top right corner). Hover over the entry for Pardox Launcher. On the right side, you'll see three dots. Click on that and select "Restore and Add Exception." You should be able to start the game after doing that.

Other Avast customers are reporting the same problem in the Steam forum
Avast and AVG had a problem earlier this year that caused some versions of Microsoft Office to be deleted from many PCs, including mine. Since my Office installation was a free download that I got through my employer, it couldn't be replaced. I uninstalled AVG and will not be renewing my subscription. Windows 10 has the Defender application included in it.

You don't want to go with defender, it is horrible. Your real problem is that you should not be using two different anti-virus protections, the combat each other.

Defender didn't delete Microsoft Office and it wasn't running when AVG deleted it.
It sounded like from what you were saying that you were running AVG and Avast.
Both AVG and Avast had the same problem because they use the some of the same software internally.
