Launch Crash: Error Code: 0xc0000005

Game works if I switch to an earlier (beta) version.

Never DL'd mods, no mod folder exists.

When I attempt to launch EU4 1.12, it quickly crashes:

By default, my PC is set to run as Admin, so I do not understand why permissions would be an issue (for 1.12, whereas I changed nothing from being able to launch/play 1.11.4).

After the hotfix today, I am still having the same issue.

Reverted back to 1.11.4, and it launches and runs normally.
Toggled back to no-betas (1.12), did the 405.5 MB download...

and same exact error persists
(I already did the uninstall/delete/etc yesterday)

Adding that I use Windows 7, 4 GB memory, 275 NVDIA

1.12.1, I assume you mean?

What makes you mention permissions, if I can ask? Are you seeing some indication that's the problem?

Try renaming your documents/paradox/eu4 folder to something else, and run up 1.12.1 - any better?

Yes @ 1.12.1
I mention permissions because if I google the error message, links indicate that it is permissions based (which should not be an issue).
Renaming folder results in no change.
Perhaps vs a permissions issue, it is an issue with ntdll.dll ?

I also did this too just in case:

Please go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Europa Universalis IV\_CommonRedist\DirectX\ and run dxsetup.exe
Please go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Europa Universalis IV\_CommonRedistvcredist\ and run vcredist.exe

IMO, there is something that changed when Paradox updated EU4.exe to the 1.12 version.

That's part of the nVidia video driver. Are you up to date from here?

Well, yes, we commonly do change something when we release a new patch

Please do a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-EU4
- unsubscribe from ALL EU4 mods in the Steam Workshop
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/SteamApps/common/EU4 AND Documents/Paradox/EU4
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- start the game with no mods active and test

IF that does not help: We've had some weird reports that after EU4 has failed to run like this (not even the launcher appearing), try running any other game then the game runs! DoTA, Age of Empires and Age of Mythology are ones I've heard helped.

I'd be fascinated to hear your results.

That's not quite correct. 0xC00005 has nothing to do with permissions.

It's the Microsoft error code for an Access Violation. Or, in other words, an attempt was made to either read or write from a memory location that was not assigned to the process in question (in this case: eu4.exe)

Short of an actual hardware failure (which happened to me once, when a mainboard malfunctioned) it's always a software failure somewhere.

In this sense it might be interpreted as an issue with permission, I guess. The application has no permission to read from or write to the location it was attempting to. But, at the same time, the application also has no business trying to read or write there. In any case, it's not an issue with what normally is understood to be a permission, which is the level of rights assigned to the user account that is running the application.

It's certainly not an issue with ntdll.dll itself. ntdll.dll is the module that contains the routine that intercepts and reports the processor error. The actual error will have been caused elsewhere.

I did the EU4 reinstall for the 4th time (#4 being just now following your instructions exactly) since the 1.12 initial patch-day, still no dice on it working
(never done mods, do not have any mods, and the play-another-game 'trick' is uneffective)

I find myself wondering if Windows 10 will 'fix' this ... or if it is instead that the NVIDIA cards are 275 when there seems to be 900s now.

Very puzzling to never have this issue with EU4.exe from Day 1 until the 1.12 patch...
(incidentally, I have one other game that refuses to launch since their most recent patch, and that is XCOM Enemy Unknown, tried all the suggestions for that one too)

Can you please run Windows Update from your Start menu and let it apply what it wants to? In particular any .NET updates, we've had a few reports of that fixing this issue.

I had multiple optional updates... did those & rebooted & got notification that the updates were installed.

EU4 1.12.2 would not work (same issue)

For 5th time, did the full uninstall, rebooted, reinstall, rebooted, and still does not want to launch

In the meantime, whenever I run a "Verify Cache" since 1.12.2, I keep getting the "1 file failed to validate and will be reacquired" (which seems to be 128 bytes)

Seems like you have a Steam problem then, let's do a clean reinstall with Steam refresh:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-EU4
- exit Steam
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/SteamApps/common/EU4 AND Documents/Paradox/EU4
- manually delete everything in the Steam folder EXCEPT steam.exe and the /SteamApps/ folder
- manually run steam.exe to rebuild all that
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- start the game with no mods active and test

Same thing persists, I think when 1.12 eu4.exe was updated, it points to more recent graphic cards ... where my NVIDA cards are 275 (7 years old?), despite being intel i7 2.65ghz and 4gb ram.

I am reasonably certain that it has to do with the launcher pop-up. Is there any way to skip it, launch with all DLCs selected, straight to the in-game menu?

Just don't start steam, and fire up EU4 through either the Windows Explorer or a shortcut link. It will pop up a dialog box, altering you that steam is not running, and that not all features are available, but all DLC's should be there.

I tried that after completely exiting out of Steam and it still generates the same crash.

I just need a way to skip the launcher menu. There has to be some sort of command prompt you can insert to do so?

Okay, I compared GeForce 8800 vs GTX 275 ... the later, of which I have 2x, is apparently not the issue, due to being a more capable/stronger video card.
