Yeah, the Latin Empire was essentially a marauder state; the mercenary, land-based equivalent of Tortuga at its peak.

I like the idea of the di Salerno family forming Rome, though. If something that absurd is to be in the game at all then it's only fair the last of the Lombards should be able to form it. ;)

Obviously the real Latin Empire was a joke.

However in my game I see it as a Frankish attempt at taking on the mantle that the Romans left behind so I love to use the Latin Empire as my primary title to signify this.

In an older game of mine it was a reconquest by Sicilian Greeks against the Fatimids, they restored themselves to the Imperial dignity and began liberating the old empire.

in an even older game the Normans of Sicily won Greece from the Shiites in a crusade and restored the empire, adopted Greek ways and also began reconquering the De jure Byzantine Empire.

though both my efforts are topped by the time the Byzantine emperor died in battle during an invasion of Greece, the empire truly being on its last legs.
One of his sons headed for Sicily for the heir was there, The king of Denmark (with de France de jure drifted into it). So as the Fatimid hordes moved to crush the last remaining Byzantine stack 80000 veteran crusader Danes joined in.

The most loyal Dukes were crowned kings afterwards and from Copenhagen the ERE entered its Danish phase, enforced by the constantly overpowering Danish hordes in France. At the end the De Jure lands+Syria were restored.

Do you mean the actual Latin Empire or the fictional Hail Italia! empire that you use it for? Because the actual Latin Empire was a historical abomination without even a veneer of legitimacy.

It's a game. There's not really a better way to make do with anything else if you're playing an Italian. Chill out, it was a joke. I'm sorry to have offended the mighty and legitimate Roman Empire as ordained by the Vicar of Christ on Earth, may they ever crush the Greek heathens...

This isn't the thread for arguing about who's the real Rome, which is indisputably the Byzantines anyways. Let's not continue the "real Rome" crap here, it comes up in every other thread and goes on without end. Maybe instead this can just be the "let's compare our Romes (whichever one they may be)" thread.

Now I wasn't aware that I came across as hostile as all that with my question, but, eh, internet. You made a comment that the Latin empire is more legitimate than the HRE. I don't think it is all unreasonable to check if you're being serious or not. The extent to which an actual historical polity is blurred by people's fan fictions for it can make it difficult to keep track of where serious statements stop and wish fulfillment begins. My post was written more in a tone of incredulity than aggression though, and I don't want to go into a discussion about it either. Especially not with so much hyperbole on the table.

I'll try top this. Started as Duke of Apulia, became King of Sicily. France loses Aquitaine to a Muslim Invasion, Pope calls a crusade and the Kaiser wins, receives the Kingdom of Aquitaine title. The Kaiser dies leaving his son, my son-in-law, the new Kaiser. I requested an Invasion from the Pope, got it, invaded the Holy Roman Empire and won with the help of mercenaries. Ever since the 1.07 patch, there's been a glitch with the transfer of vassals... so my son-in-law kept every single vassal because they were duke or count tier, but the King of Bohemia. He was also imprisoned because that's just what happens after the war. And you know who you can imprison without fearing rebellion? Vassal of vassals. Imprisoned every single duke, count under the King of Aquitaine, which is all of Germany and Aquitaine. Sure I have -101000 tyranny, but what are they going to do about it? So I banish my son-in-law... now all of those dukes are my vassals... and imprisoned by me still. Then I banish them. Then the counts. And I shall replace them with Normans. Welcome to the Holy Norman Empire.

First I must revoke the titles of the barons though.

Started off as Duke of southern Italy. Swore fealty to HRE. Became King and blobbed in every direction. Once I had a large enough dynasty I pulled the great Norman coup. Started a war for the HRE and won. Then started to imprison and banish everyone. Gave all the titles to my family.

I guess it was the italics that made it seem pointed, and that combined with some other (seemingly at least) hostile posts before it, sorry. No tone of voice on the internet... Well I was just making a joke, I guess I should have anticipated some people would get offended (I'm not saying you did). Secondly, I see them as both pretty much equally illegitimate, although I think the fact of at least holding the Imperial capital and usurping the crown in the same manner as many Greeks had before them gives at least some respectability (not much) to the claim, if not the method. That said, if they really wanted to be Roman Emperors, they should have thought better than to sack the city like Alaric.

I think you Normans have spent too long around the Sicilian Muslims with your hyper-imprisonments... The only games I've ever played along those lines have been Muslim invasion/strip-title/suddenly-Greece-is-entirely-Egyptian games!
