Last Fortress of Freedom: A U.S AAR

Welcome, reader! I'm about to tell about my difficult and strange game in Arsenal of Democracy. The events happening in this AAR are mainly caused by mixed DAIM and AoD AI. I was experimenting and combined certain lines of the AI files of DAIM into AoD the other day. This AAR is the result.

Things are looking very similar to the start of a Hearts of Iron 2 AAR, Democracy's Last Legs. I don't want to recreate it, though, so I'll try to keep things different.

The style will be one quite commonly used, a news format. That means in some updates I will write it from the NBC news view, sometimes from a radio view.


The AAR starts on the 19th of June 1941.

Settings:

Democracy can start war: YES
Difficulty: Very emu (Very hard bonuses for AI, no maluses for me, except for -20% IC for me)
Aggressiveness: Furious
Full IC takeover: Yes
Full techteam takeover: Yes

I will not use cheats/gamey tactics!
I will only use historically plausible movements and operations!

However, I might create some surrender events. For example Japan: I'm not going to hunt for them in every single VP island of the Pacific.


Timeline:

January 1936- June 1940

• Republican Spain won the Civil War
• Italy was afraid of Albania and didn't declare war in 1938
• The 2nd Sino-Japanese war still goes on as of 16/6/1941
• Poland was partitioned by Germany and the USSR
• Sweden declared war on the USSR in the Winter War
• Winter War ended
• Vichy France was formed
• The Balkans joined the Axis, no war there even though Yugoslavia broke the pact of steel
• Republican Spain joined the allies in 1940
• The United States joined the Allies in mid-1940
• U.S and the U.K suffered heavy casualties when defending Spain. 24 U.S divisions were lost
• Spain was partitioned by Germany and Italy
• Libya was taken by the UK
• Further 9 U.S divisions were lost in Norway
• U.S retreat from Norway
• 36 UK divisions were destroyed after a naval defeat in Northern Atlantic
• Northern Ireland was captured by German paratroopers

1941

• June 16th - Germany invades the British Isles
• July 11th - Southern England is lost
• August 3rd - Germany captures Edinburgh and is pushing north
• August 16th - Counterattack in Scotland starts
• October 23rd - Germany declares war on Soviet Union
• November 7th - Retreat from Scotland
• November 9th - Japan declares war on Allies
• December 16th - Troops are back in America

1942

• January 8th - Soldiers reach Wake Island
• February 23rd - Failed invasion on Japan, Germany invades Libya
• March 12th - Allied defeat at El Alamein
• March 15th - Midway lost, Germany advanced towards the Suez
• May 9th - Germany conquers Israel, Venezuela joins the allies, Malta is lost
• June 19th - Filippines are annexed by Japan
• July 18th - Japan invades the Dutch and English colonies
• August 27th - American divisions liberate Sumatra, China is annexed by Japan

• September 16th - Operation Safeguard starts, Singapore liberated
• November 18th - USSR is about to die, foothold in Siam is secured. Marshall dies.
• December 18th - Siam surrenders, Germany invades Persia. Loss statistics: 14,3 million killed in the war

1943

• January 3rd - French provinces in Vietnam transferred to the USA
• January 27th - Malaysia liberated, landings in Japan. South Africa annexed by Germany
• March 24th - Research of Nuclear Waste Bomb starts
• April 22nd - Bitter Peace
• June 12th - Iraq joins the Axis, Tokyo is captured
• July 4th - Japanese surrender, border drawing starts
• July 4th - Asia redrawn, also includes a diplomatic map of the world

• September 13th - Situation at the fronts, Peru joins the allies
• October 12th - Operation Lancaster: U.S landings in German-occupied Scotland

"Today's news. Following the German invasion of Northern Ireland last week, the German Kriegsmarine has launched a cooperative attack with the German air force. A total of 10 divisions landed to the province of Norwich in eastern England. Norwich is only a few hundred miles away from the British capital of London. President Roosevelt ordered the navy, which is currently located in the Pacific, to rebase to Washington D.C. 12 marine units would there embark to the fleet and aid the British in their fight against the German armies."

NBC News.

"You are listening to NBC news, the voice of America and the Allied forces. Today the English and the French Expeditionary Forces' defensive line in southern England broke. One American B-24 Liberator bomber was shot down during the intensive combat in the city Portsmouth. The bomb wing managed to slow down the German advance in the city enough to allow the British troops to demolish the city. Four factories were burnt and the roads were destructed in hope to stop the Germans from reaching the last stronghold in southern England, the city of Plymouth."

"The defending 4 divisions, of which one was French, held the city for surprisingly long. The docks suffered from heavy artillery fire, and the airport was under constant bombing by the German close air support. When the fascists finally captured the city, the three American bombers rebased to the last city in South England: Plymouth."

"Unfortunately the remaining defenders were too disorganized and the American reinforcements were stuck in the middle of the Atlantic due to a naval battle and loss of fuel. The city was lost after only two hours of fighting. The Germans will now push towards Scotland, but nine American marine units should be in Scapa Flow before that."

"Our reporter will give us feedback on the situation later this evening."

Oh god I hate this fr**** province, when I play Germany I always make sure to take it quickly with paratroopers in order to prevent such a stupid and frustrating situation.

Your transports ran out of fuel? Yeesh, they have 3000km range...how long did that naval battle last?

Edit: Enough US/UK divisions have been lost at sea that it seems like a person could walk from Long Island to Wales on their floating corpses without getting his feet wet.

Actually I have to admit that it was a failure of my own. See, the fleet was located in California, so I moved it to Washington D.C to pick up the troops. Of course I forgot to let them refuel. The naval battle lasted something from 7-12 days. I didn't pay attention to the length that much, because I was constantly checking the British situation.

Twelve U.S marine divisions landed in Scapa Flow are pushing back the fascists in Scotland. The marine unit, led by Field Marshal Marshall, liberated the cities of Aberdeen and Inverness before engaging the enemy in a strategically decisive battle in Dunfermline. On operational level, the battle was not important due to significant outnumbering, but it allows the marines to break through the lines to at least Glasgow. Marshall’s strategy took advantage of the moment when the Germans were still transporting additional forces to Scotland."

"Other news. Already the second U.S experimental nuclear reactor has been deployed in Denver. President Roosevelt said in an official speech that America has taken another great leap forward and another step closer to nuclear breakthrough. Rumors tell that the scientists in Denver have found out that this technology could give birth to the most powerful and deadliest weapon ever seen. Only certain thing is that everyone promises that the new technology will help us in our crusade against the fascists."

"The breakthrough of the twelve marine divisions in mid-August succeeded well. The divisions, supported by two strategic air wings, managed to break through all the way to Glasgow, before finally encountering German divisions in Edinburgh. On a heavily rainy night, the divisions engaged the small German army garrisoned in the city, but by the morning, further 10 divisions had arrived. Field Marshal Marshall called off the attack to avoid additional casualties and to prevent an inevitable German counteroffensive."

"Today is the 22nd of October. It's mostly sunny all over America, but in the southeast small showers of rain may be present. President Roosevelt held a speech at 9.00 AM, regarding the event in the east."

Ministers, commanders, citizens. Today it has been proven that there are no boundaries in Nazi ambitions. Adolf Hitler said in a public speech that "the German people naturally needs more room". Very early this morning the Great Russian bear, the Soviet Union, was attacked by Germany. The rest of the Axis forces have followed the lead of their ally and joned the war. This is a sad day for America. We can only watch along when the Titans clash.

"What President Roosevelt didn't know was that in the afternoon of the same day, the governments of Finland and Sweden joined the war against the USSR. Experts estimate that Finland and Sweden's ambitious declarations will hit back and the USSR will annex these countries. They are unsure about the possible outcome of the war, which the Germans call "Barbarossa". The only sure thing so far is that the United States will give their full support to the USSR."

Whew, I was starting to think about the possibility that my DAIM+AoD mixture messed up the game and Germany would never invade USSR, but it did happen finally. I hope the war will last long, giving us a chance to strike.
