Viva Heats of Iron! 
Hearts of Iron 2 is, indeed, a very different game IMO, and with all the wonderful mods in existance for HoI it's still very difficult to compare. All I know is that if they make a CORE mod for HoI2 I seriously doubt I'll ever play another game of HoI again.
Though, I'll always remember you, your songs, your sprites, and the soft red glow from the screen after a long night of spreading communism. *Sigh* Yes, my dear, I'll always remember the nights we had together, and I'll never be able to forget how you opened my eyes to the world of world conquest.
