I was playing as Macedonia and doing pretty well. By about 620 I had colonised up into the Balkans, conquered Illyria and Thrace, dealt with a civil war and doing well on research (modded to 2.4 like everyone else). Then Rome suddenly declared war and sent an army of 92 units which just blew me away - I had about 60k dotted around my little empire but I couldn't resist the Roman juggernaut. This may be small fry to some of you but 92 is about the largest single army I've seen in almost any PI game. Anyone seen lager?

Selucia broke 102 thousand besieging Syria.

Thank goodness attrition allowed me to break the siege with 82 thousand, or I'd have lost a good 4.5 gold a month in trade...

I saw 90 of Carthage but my fleet trapped it in Spain until it completely perished. Also Egypt loves 80 units big stacks of doom but they are even easier to contain since they almost never have a matching fleet (please add wood to Egypt to encourage ship building!). Also Macedons once fielded 70-something but it had 16k of real troops inside.

Generally it's easier to just let them die due to attrition than attempt on touching those. Unless you have 60k elites close and you are sure they have militia. Elephants are very good in this job, try elephants.

Egypt starts with wood in Cyprus - being a port, it can choose to trade it to any one of its coastal provinces it pleases.

Should Egypt take Syria in a war with Selucia, it then has a second coastal wood province, which basically allows her any ships or archers she'll ever want.

I've seen Egypt with about 62K, but there was a lot of fluff (militia) in there.

170 - my own, as Rome.

Needless to say, it was my first war in my first game and since I didn't know about reinforcements, attrition and supply limits I just kept adding new Units to a already overblown stack. Actual numbers of troopes varied between 40k and 60k depending on fortune of war. Furthermore, it was literally all I had and I suffered heavily from ping-ponging enemies.

I have learned a lot since then.

Now my armies range in size between 10 and 20 garrisons for strategic reasons and only cluster up when there is a large hostile army to beat, only to split and scatter once I'm - or rather, the enemy is - finished.

A barbarian army of 75k once crossed the alps. My 30k killed 25k of them (with 5k losses), then they accepted surrender and became quite a lot of slaves :p

The largest army I saw was about 40.000 men and I thought that was large, but seeing some of the army sizes you people had to face I'm glad that I haven't encountered a 60.000+ army. However indeed attrition would quickly deal with them during invasion and even if they assault every city they encounter their morale will be so weak that they can be driven back and forced to lose even more men by the 10% attrition modifier (out of supply).

I wonder, which general in his right mind would send an army of 60k men if he knew that in all probability they will all die because of attrition?

The one who knows that if he doesn't, you'll easily beat his army with your surrounding men :) .

It's not a bad choice, per se, as it's their only hope of taking the province... But it's certainly a costly one, as my provinces have Large Stone Walls, and trade for stone.
