I've found it helpful to sneak close with my melee characters (for me that's Barik and my PC) and have Barik drop Clash of Iron early and often. Lantry does still get attacked for me, but not nearly as much as it seems to be happening for you.

He gets attacked first cos he´s weak. It´s a solid tactic, so I don´t see the problem. Use chokepoints, use taunts, increase his defenses... or just get rid of him altogether cos he´s not that useful and once he teaches you the life sigil you can give heal spells to every party member :p

Yeah, it certainly helps to get the talents that boost his defenses, and pumping Vitality helps his Control Life skill. I think he becomes pretty useful if you spend some time on him. I didn't like him at first but now that he's got a wide range of useful spells I'm pretty happy with him.

Have him begin every battle in stealth and only break stealth after your tanks have engaged.

He's an incredibly powerful mage, so getting used to him is well worth it (he's 3 levels up on anyone else in my team right now because of all the killing he does).

I'm glad to see others are also noticing this.

I'm wondering if the AI is programmed so ranged units focus on enemies also at range. Perhaps it's a script to focus on those with lower armor.

I keep running into the issue where if Barik isn't directly engaged with someone. The taunt wears off after 1-2 rounds. They then immediately turn to focus Lantry again. He's the only cloth wearer in the group, and normally isn't doing anything for the first 30sec of the engagement. As I intentionally wait to blow his buffs and such until Barik and my main character have applied pressure. I even utilize the "stay in stealth till later" approach. He still gets focused by ranged/caster enemies that aren't directly engaged once I move him out of stealth and do something. I have to constantly move Barik into engagement manually, and then use his taunt off cooldown on ranged enemies I can't get to. And Lantry still tends to kiss the ground after popping out to heal/buff.

Even enemy casters that utilize status effects target him over the tank that's taunting them. Which seems ridiculous from an AI standpoint. Targeting the caster with stats that help resist/reduce status effects. Over the meathead clearly meant to take a hit and not a fear spell lol.

I find that there are generally other ways to deal with enemies targeting weaker party members as well, besides just Barik's taunts. You can use interrupts and prone to great effect for this sort of thing. False Pit is a life saver (I have it on almost all of my characters), as is the stun from Arc Lightning. My main character is Dual Wield, so Leg Sweep is good for that as well. You just keep the ranged enemies out of the battle until you're ready to sweep them up.

In Pillars of Eternity, enemies will prioritize people with the lowest Damage Reduction (armor), so I wouldn't be surprised if the AI is similar.

While that's logical for bows and thrown weapons. It's counter-intuitive for spells.

But in a way, I guess that would give you more incentive to utilize the over-abundance of spell-focused companions the game gives you. If you stick to the typical rpg party makeup of one cloth/caster, he's going to be focused and slaughtered. But with the game giving you multiple casters and possibly you playing one as well. Then the AI wouldn't focus on just one cloth wearer. Almost seems like their choice at having so many casters may have indirectly been a result of that programming maybe?

So you're saying that you use Barik as a typical tank, with engagements and taunts. And then alternate CC with all your other characters on the ranged enemies until they're dead?

If so....that seems really tedious. :(

Not exactly. I usually tank and off-tank with Barik and my main character. Lantry and my other party member (usually Eb or Verse) will False Pit or Arc Lightning a ranged attacker to open combat and then focus fire on whatever we're tanking, also healing where necessary. If the ranged enemies remain problematic, I'll try to pull them into the fray--usually by using a spell with push to move the battle line closer to them (my main uses the basic lightning spell and the illusion arc spell). Sometimes I'll have my main run out and drop someone to the ground if there are a lot of ranged enemies. But usually even keeping one ranged enemy occupied (the most dangerous one, naturally) makes a huge difference. Don't forget, too, that you can have Barik taunt ranged enemies far from the front lines. I'll sometimes even have him drop a False Pit once he grabs engagement, since his damage as a tank is largely negligible anyway. And there are always potions\buffs for when Lantry does start to get waylaid.

I will admit that I'm still trying to open up my thinking and playstle with this game over previous games. I keep forgetting that the meathead tank can still cast spells. XD

Also trying to adjust to the fact that there is no real interrupt effect in this game as far as casting goes. I'm so accustomed to D&D style rules in infinity engine games. So casting spells when on the front lines is nearly impossible. I have to get outside of my box more it seems.

I'm torn between having Lantry or Eb in my party. I use Lantry to support Barik and his quill attacks are useful. On the other hand, Eb has better combos imho and she's not quite as squishy as Lantry.

Both! Nothing is more fun than encasing someone's head in a bubble so that Lantry can have his way with them. :D

That and the fact he can get a passive that increases the lore and thrown weapon experience rate to of allies. So much worth for my first play thru with my main using a Javelin and using Eb. That one talent helped three out of four members.
