@Styrbiorn and beowulf: But which language was spoken by the majority in these provinces? Swedish or Finnish?

Finnish of course.

However, those towns were founded by the Swedes, and given Swedish names (for example Helsinki is a Finnish pronounciation of the original Helsingfors). The country was considered a natural part of the country. Sweden was divided into the Western (nowadays Sweden) and Eastern (nowadays Finland) "rikshalvor" ("halfrealms"), while the other provinces like Estonia and Pommerania were considered foreign conquered provinces. Well anyway, I guess it's because it's more natural for me to say Viborg, Åbo and Helsingfors. :)

yes I think someone from Finland would tell me the opposite stuff, but I have decided like this:

All scandinavian country have scandinavian as nationality. So I look into the provinces.csv and see to which region they belong (Denmark, Sweden, Norway or Finland) and then I give the provinces and cities the names of this region ok? :)

I also edited a few south-eastern European names and some Polish and Bohemian too. So take a look at it.

A Finnish guy would probably tell you the opposite yes.

Well, you do what you want, I'll continue playing with the original Swedish names anyway :)

And, BTW, you do know that Scandinavia is only Denmark, Norway and Sweden, don't you?

ever heard chaucer? now imagine auld french ;)
a frenchman from 1419 would speak a dialect of french so bizarre as to be completely unintelligable by a modern speaker. At the time, 1419 english and 1419 french were very very similar.

Suddenly the world is looking much more exotic.

Bear in mind that that site does not claim to be 100 percent accurate. In particular I think "Glesga" is wrong, if such a thing can be wrong. "Glesca" is more common; similarly "Lothian" seems to be used much more than "Lowden".

I gave "Inbhir Nis" rather than "Innerness" because I assumed the people round there spoke mostly Gaelic, and "Dublin" rather than "Duibhlinn" because I assumed the people around there spoke mostly English. I guess these could be matters of opinion.

All the "w"s in Russia look a bit odd. And I would have thought there should be some traces of French in Brittany.

The same for the "v"s in Russia :) I changed the "v"s to "w"s because I found all the names only with "w"s and not "v"s in the sources I was searching.

For Duibhlinn, Innerness and Lowden will stay in the Lallans language because I don't want to mix Lallans and Gaelic although Scotland is Gaelic in the game.

I will correct "Glesca".
What do you mean with "And I would have thought there should be some traces of French in Brittany."? (sorry, but my English is not nearly perfect ;))

But what is Scotland in Lallans? Still Scotland?

I have tried out some countries for beta-testing and it is a very nice experience to play a country with this "new" names, it makes the game much more interesting in my eyes, but soon you can test it :)

I will correct "Glesca" and I will change "Breizh" (country) to "Bretainia". But the rest of Brittany will stay like it is, but what do you mean with "And I would have thought there should be some traces of French in Brittany."? (sorry, but my English is not nearly perfect ;))

"Duibhlinn" is the Irish (not Lallans) name for Dublin. I don't know what you mean by "mixing Lallans and Gaelic"; I was thinking of using Gaelic for the Highlands and Lallans for the rest of Scotland.

...I meant that, as far as I know, Brittany was as French as it was Breton, so *something* about it, probably the name of the country, ought to be in French. But this is a subject I know nothing about. [Except that "Bretainia" is actually in Basque; do you mean "Bretagne"? (which is what it is in French)]

Just some comments

- Croatia in Croatian is "Hrvatska" and not Kroazia
- You coul call the Papal States "Patrimonium Petri" (because the official language of the church was Latin)

- Kosovo shoud stay Kosovo, the "A" at the end was invented by Albanian nationalists to make it sound Albanian and thus to give them claims on the land.

Forgive me for asking, but were those sources in English? Have you decided what conventions to use, when translating from another script into the latin alphabet? I have always seen the cyrillic "B" transliterated into "v"; maybe in German (or Polish, from a brief web search) "w" is more natural.

@Pishtaco: I misunderstood you. I will change Inverness back to Inbhir Nis. But what about Dublin now .. It belonged to England in 1419 right? So what spoke the majority of the province of Meath, Gaelic or English? Because for me it is not important what language they spoke in 1 city, it is important what they spoke in the province. But I have 2 more questions to you. 1. Is there any other Scottish name for "The Grampians"? 2. Is there any other Scottish name for "Scotland"?

@Txini: I renamed Corunna to "La Coruña" because "A Coruña" is the galician name for it, but there is no special nationality in this province in the game.. so La Coruña.

@Pishtaco again :) it sucks but I guess that you are right with these stupid V and W ... argh stupid atlas! But at first I will look around a bit and double check that before I correct everything :(

I have updated the list again. Still need to know what Russia is in its own language! and if BiB is reading this thread, you can give me the old Dutch names you told me about! :)

Sorry for not being present when I was needed:

Well, if yor rationale for problems like the one with Coruña is the province's culture, Galicia's one is Iberian, not Spanish nor Galician, so...
I'd go with just Coruña, less polemic than adding the article before it.

Bye, The Larch.
