I've noticed a number of vanilla placeholder characters dotted about in Mamluk era Syria which I'm assuming mean the developers may or may not add historical characters to the titles at some point.

The count tier Aleppo title is one of them, but the duke tier one could very well have a historical figure if you wish. I've been lucky enough to have number of good books on the Bahri Mamluk periods which provide mini biographies for loads of confirmed title holders. I thought I may make a suggestion on characters you could use.

Shams al Din Qarasunqur b. circa 1260? - 14 Sep 1328.
Mamluk emir originally of Syrian Christian background funnily enough. Captured directly by Baybars when he conquered the village of Qara in Syria.
Medieval sources mention him being of a similar age to Sultan Kitbugha. The sources say he was a very young child when taken back to Egypt with the other Christian boys from the area and with them trained as a Mamluk. Had a long and successful career serving a number of Sultans before finally resigning all his posts then defecting to the Mongols in 1312 . He was scared of being caught up in one of Nasir Muhammad's purges whom he had actually supported. He died of natural causes.

Listed as governor of Aleppo 1282 to 1292 then again 1300 to 1310. Actually has anumber of other posts in Syria dotted about but this is the noticeable one.

The info for this chap was from the below, but I have a few other sources for others.

* Amir Mazor, The Rise and Fall of a Muslim Regiment: The Manosauriyya in the First Mamluk Sultanate
*
Amalia Levanoni , A Turning Point in Mamluk History: The Third Reign of al-Nasir Muhammad Ibn Qalawun

I thought I'd bump this with any information people might find useful since I'm also doing my own little side mod.

As per above here are the other listed in game duke tier rulers of Aleppo under the Bahri dynasty between 1279 and 1310. Unless specified otherwise they can be assumed to be originally Central Asian as with Baibars etc .

Sources; Mongols and Mamluks by Reuven Amitai Preiss & the aforementioned Amir Mazor book.

1279-1280: Aqqush al-Shamsi
1280-1282: Sanjar al-Bashqardi
1282-1292: Qarasunqur
1292-1299: Balaban al-Tabbakhi
1300-1310: Qarasunqur

Aqqush al-Shamsi: Only his name and tenure is listed. However given the short duration and his name itself, I'd say he was likely a mamluk. DOB & DOD no details. But presumably an established major emir ( 40ish) when ruling Aleppo.

Sanjar al-Bashqardi: Sanjar al-Bashqardi al-Salihi. Governor and likely a mamluk of Aleppo. Was present at the Second Battle of Homs in 1281. His age and date of death are pure speculation based on his full name indicating he was originally a mamluk of As-Salih Ayyub.

Balaban al-Tabbakhi: (1250? d. 1300 ) A mamluk purchased by emir Qalawun from one of his own underlings before he became Sultan. Held a number of senior governorships (Tripoli and Aleppo) and was an active if sometimes foolhardy military commander. His birth date is an estimate based on him being purchased by an up and coming Qalawun. Date of death is recorded.

Qarasunqur: Already mentioned but would add he lived out his days a wealthy noble in Mongol Persia. The only downside is he supposedly had to foil numerous Ismaili Assassins sent after him by the enraged Sultan Nasir.
