Surely a land bridge across the channel and the straits of Gibraltar are taking things too far, the channel is England greatest defense, what do you reckon?

What version is this, I have 1.08 but no land bridges.

I don't really care about the new land bridges but I hate the one that connects Ireland and Scotland. I think it makes it too easy for England or Scotland to conquer Eire now. I don't have a problem with the Kent-Calais bridge because the English navy should be able to defend it

Given that this is about as challenging as taking candy from a baby for a player and difficult for the AI anyway, I would tend to think it only helps. Also allows England to get full income from Eire without having to go fully naval (which they should do anyway, but that's beside the point).
I don't have a problem with the Kent-Calais bridge because the English navy should be able to defend it
Yes, but conversely, anybody who seeks to invade England after the 15th century should have to have control of the Channel, and this means a strong fleet of ships... So there is no point to the strait. If anything, it makes England too integrated into Europe, as many posters have argued here. Remember, England was never at the center of Europe's axis, even at its height; it's always been a flank power, and this is because of geography.

Yup, England is almost always split between Scotland, France, with a couple provinces to other continental countries.
I think most all can agree: the straits between Calais and Kent, and between Meath and the main island are not intended to help out SP; they are an MP addition. I expect that we won't be seeing them in a fully finished 1.09 (hope hope).

In my current game as Austria, it's England who is beating France, together with Aragon : they cut it in two slices.

And I've refrained of attacking France (not a single war against any of them).

But in my other as Russia (AGCEEP), they're down to London and two colonies.

IMHO, it all depends on the starting war : if they do well enough, they won't suffer too much, and if they take France out, they're safe. If they don't, they're doomed.

I think the game is well balanced without this land bridge.

I'd like to see the Meath landbridge. As Scotland, I scuttled my fleet to avoid financial ruin (as well as to avoid the English sinking it, I wasn't sure which would come first so I sank the ships and used the money to buy the troops that kept Northumberland in my hands), but then couldn't help Eire when it was my ally or hurt it when it was my enemy.

Not that 5000 men would have done much good on either side...

I'd also like to see a Gibraltar landbridge. Make it easier for the Muslim nations, and when they lose easier for the Iberians.

I'd also like the ability to close straits from land--i.e, the Sea of Marmara is treated as a Turkish province after some event that gives it +1 fortification in Thrace and Smyrna. (For that matter, Byzantium needs to have level 3 fortification in Thrace--haven't the Paradox guys read about the Siege of 1453? Mehmet needed huge cannon to beat down the walls).

The Straits of Dover, though, just doesn't make sense.

It's in the current version, and it gives Spain a STRONG incentive to expand ahistorically through the Sahara. It would be much better to simply make north Africa (from Fez to Tripoli) part of Europe. This would give the desired close interaction without creating a land connection that wasn't employed during the game period.

That would be nice, a "narrowscode" of some sort. Unfortunately, it would take a lot of coding.

Agreed. It's level 3 in the AGCEEP.

Gibraltar: Except that most of north africa is worthless, cross-cultural, and cross-religious. If Spain wanted to take that over, good for it--it's more economical to colonize South America.

Narrowscode: The Sea of Marmara has a province number, right? Rig an event where when Turkey gets to the land tech level where it gets artillery, it acquires that province. Then you can't pass the straits without having military access (or conquering it, but that's just a matter of sailing ships through).

You're forgetting one thing : manpower. The reason to take northwestern africa is to get a connection to the unsettled provinces, and to colonize them, and to conquer & convert pagan provinces. All these will yield a wellcome manpower. ;)

Impossible : only land provinces can be owned by countries.
