As a side question would it be better to split my airforce (fighters, cas, tac, strat, nav) into wings of 100 (as the aces bonus suggest it's the default wing size), is it better to create large wings like of 1000 planes, or it just doesn't matter as long as there are no aces?

I'm quite new to the game so i appreciate some feedback from experienced guys.

Thanks a lot.

I would say wing sizes of 100 as a safe bet for two reasons. Each wing operating in an air zone increases the chance of an encounter / detection / combat event happening. The other reason smaller wing sizes are generally better is that size of fronts/fleets influences how many aircraft in a wing can participate in an engagement. So if you have 1 wing of 1000 nav bombers operating in a sea zone and they encounter 4 destroyers, very few nav bombers will engage. How ever if it was a 4 CV, 10 CAP, 30 Screen size fleet, a lot more would participate in the battle and the damage inflicted on the fleet will be a lot more substantial.

Thank you.

So regarding fleet interdiction is it equally well to send 10 wings of 100 planes to the interdiction zone? Will they still participate in large numbers if they spot a big fleet just like if there was a single wing of 1000 planes?

No it doesn't work that way it seems. Each combat encounter is based on each wing separately. I have 2 posts from a while ago that go over some scenario's I tested that will provide a bit of detailed information.
It seems 1.4 is going to change the air combat system some, so this data may soon be obsolete in a couple months.

Many thanks for the links to your reports.

So it seems ideally i should use small wings if i expect small groups of ships bc of the plane cap and increased spotting, or large wings if i expect massive fleets like a US Carrier force in order to have a devastating effect. Of course in reality we can only guess what is coming our way :)

I'm preferential to small wings as I'd rather have more opportunities to engage both small and large fleets. Best to play around with it and see what you like best. :)
