According to the EUIV wiki, War of the Roses can result in the independence of Lancaster or York.
I'm going to play as England when the expansion is released, so I'd like to know...

1. How do I get the War of the Roses?
2. How does Lancaster or York get created? Is there any way to become either of them?

Thank you.

1) War of Roses is if Henry dies w/o a heir and/or low legitimacy

2) The event creates a Lancaster candidate and a York candidate. You then pick which one you want to be, and then the AI controls the rebellion headed by the other.

its messy. from what i heard, the lancast/york rebels spawn, and if they enforce their demands, it can somehow lead to independence. im not sure how this works, but its possible indeed. if ur rly commited, u can just start as england, kill urself (console command) and try a couple time

If neither side manage to gain the upper hand, i guess it eventually lead to separate tags. But i've never seen that happen.

I think those tags are probably a legacy of prior versions of the event which effectively divided the county in two

That'd be awesome to see,a split England, with an angry Scotland to the north and some Cornish and welsh folks to the west who would love to kick the English out of their lands....sounds like mod material to me <.< >.>

For testing purpose i added an event that added Lancaster cores everywhere, released them and played as them (just to take the screen shot below) :
07FD5D1DBEB6CEC0C8541BCF2F6709D0E9A283DD

So yeah, the tag exist and it functions properly, but there is just no way to have it appear in a normal vanilla game. It wouldn't be too hard to mod the War of the Roses events to add Lancaster/York cores in england, so that rebels may defect to them.

Are you sure? Isn't there a collapse to bankruptcy event that causes occupied provinces to get tossed to the wind?

Nope. Worst that can happen is the rebels "breaking your country" which automatically installs the rival's house on the throne of england and accept the demands of all the other rebels (so if you have welsh nationalist, the occupied provinces in wales will break away). Without existing cores for LAN or YOR, however, even if Lancaster break your country, this won't create a separate lancaster tag (rebels can't defect to a country that has never existed and will never exist in the current game)

I'm not talking about a War of the Roses event. I'm talking about the Bankruptcy event (negative income, loans maxed out, defaulting on repayment) occuring while you have provinces occupied by WOTR rebels.

I've seen one poster who showed Lancaster existing when he was playing as France and England got trashed.

rebels can't defect to a country that has never existed and will never exist in the current game

Not true, Fez or Meissen for example can be created despite nations with that culture existing and neither of them having cores at game start. I don't see why "Lancaster" (culture : english) could not somehow happen. Otherwise, why is it even included in the game?

They can create new countries from countries that have no cores and don't currently exist. Fez, Meissen, for example. I've seen one poster who showed Lancaster existing when he was playing as France and England got trashed.
I'm not sure if it's still the case in EU4 but in EU3 it was possible if nationalist rebels spawned in an English-cultured province that did not have any cores of an English-cultured nation.

About Meissen and Fez, you're right, but this is a culture related issue. If rebels spawn in a province that is not from your primary culture, they might be nationalist, and use a tag that has their own culture as primary. For instance Fez has berber for primary culture, while Morroco is Maghreb Arabic.
If nationalist rebels spawned in an English province owned by someone else than england, they'll most likely defect to england. And english nationalists won't spawn in england because english is the primary culture...

Also i was not talking about an event either but how rebels can break your country if they control more than 50% of your provinces, which often cause defection en-masses of rebel occupied provinces.

I don't know about bankruptcy, didn't tested it, but as far as i know, bankruptcy don't cause defection. I guess it's worth a try.
