I recently checked which lakes allowed the placement of pirates (i.e. are treated like sea zones) and verified 7 cases; lake Ladoga in Novgorod, the Caspian Sea (x2) and the great lakes of North America (x4).

All that is needed to correct these and make them work like lakes, without the placement of pirates being allowed, is to change the province terrain (from 5 to 6).

I have not checked yet, though I think only the great lakes would be affected by it if that's the case (and the other lakes in fantasy scenarios, but those would be rather dubious anyway).

I'll check in a quick columbus game.

Checked: lakes DO NOT allow colonization in neighbouring provinces. As said above, this would only really affect colonization in North America, as far as colonization is concerned.

Should the great lakes area be colonised, as currently happens? If yes, the great lakes might have to be excluded from the fix.

Yeah, the Great Lakes need to be colonizable. Detroit is over 300 years old (which is old for our side of the pond), and southeast michigan definitely still has french-canadian culture. (Well, a little bit. But in the EU frame it wouldn't be as diluted).

France (et al) need to be able to get to Detroit. So it's got to be true coastal. After all, Detroit was one of the first French trading posts in the Americas.

That means only Ladoga and the Caspian Sea should be made "lakes"...

Could it perhaps instead be possible to sail into the great lakes (would negate pirates being placeable there)? A longshot, I know, but I have to ask...

You'd have a better shot asking if it would be possible to create a new terrain type that functions as a sea zone for colonizing, but a lake for pirates. Even then, the odds are zilch until a new game is produced.

Actually, all that would be needed would be to make one of the great lakes "adjacent" to another seazone. Quite doable, I just don't know if it would be appropriate.
