So, when they showed the new African countries in a stream I noticed that Lake Victoria is still a thing.
Are there no local names for the lake that could have been used or is there another reason for that?

Good question. I wouldn't be surprised if it is due to that old "the game is in English, so English names are used" thing which previously has been used to rule out more plausible names.

English names are generally the way to go, but there is something a little weird about having a lake in-game named after a queen who reigned after the end of the EU4 era. If English speakers had actually known about the lake during the EU era, it would now be called something else. I think the same principle should apply as for land provinces in the New World: if the modern English name presupposes some particular course of events during or after the EU4 era, then it's better to use indigenous names.

This. Though following that principle then you can change names of really many provinces---though with dynamic naming it probably mainly is sea and lake provinces where such problems are left. Though there might still be some provinces, where the English name presupposes some course of events---even in Europe.
The obvious place to start would be to change Öresund to Øresund; though I know that will never happen.

They could use a system like they use for the wasteland (dynamic) provinces, if the majority of the land around the lake is British, it should be called lake victoria. Otherwise, it should get a local name,

Imagine if the game could truly respond to the way we change history. The area is discovered during the reign of Pedro by Portuguese conquistadors and is thus named Lago Pedro. Sigh...

Why only a dynamic name for the Brits? If they did something like that there obviously should be appropriate names for several countries.

There are local names for it like Nam Lolwe, Nalubaale, Nyanza but i guess it's like other posted - game in English thus English names. However they could add more names in dynamic names option.

Paradox has always used post-napoleonic province borders and names. There are numerous locations in Europe, that basically evolved. Just take modern bavaria, it is traditionally a mess in every pre-napoleonic Paradox game I have played so far. From wrong province borders (even if the border is marked by a river that is ingame over wrong capital locations, wrong capital names up to and including wrong government types, wrong names and so on.) Even the spelling of bavaria ("Bayern") is wrong, as it would be called "Baiern" as can be seen on every map up to Napoleon time frame. They have basically messed up everything just in that small region, including culture. And the only reason for that is their modern point of view.

Nyasa is Malawi Lake in Bantu languages and name for people living there, just like Nyanza for Victoria Lake. Interesting part is Nyanza simply means Lake.

I knew Nyasa was lake Malawi; just like how Malawi used to be Nyasaland.

That doesn't make sense, though, considering that Victoria isn't even a valid name for a ruler in EU4.

But there isn't anything preventing a Victoria in EU4 times. (Plus wasn't she born in something like 1817 or 1819?)
And PI has included wildly "incorrect" names before. E.g. in CKII where popes can be called John Paul, or Francis. Heck for most of CKII the Franciscans didn't even exist and Francis took his name after the founder of those.

I just took at peak at the Danish names and there are some which really look strange.
Adolf, yeah right. That one is only happening if Sweden takes Denmark.
Ulrik, Maximillian, Frode, Tobias, and Frans are other rather unrealistic names.

So it really looks strange to not include Victoria.

I mean we use modern names for the American Great Lakes, why shouldn't we use modern names for the African Great Lakes
