I've just finished a GC playing with Sardinia-Piedmont and never been able to convert a single POP into craftsmen, due to lack of 10 pieces of Regular Clothes.
In the middle of the campaign I though: wow, if I build up a Regular Clothes factory my POPs will become rich as the WM only has always 1 stockpiled. Then I built my factory and had 1 clerks POP in to the province, ready to be converted into craftsmen, in order to run my brand new factory (of course neither my people growth rate nor immigration were able to help me to get more POPs for my factory).
Guess what? For the rest GC just 1 regular clothes was stockpiled in the WM and I've never been able to get the 10 pieces I needed to convert my POPs.
Even worse the lacking of regular clothes lasted for the whole GC

Is this a known bug or what?

I am able to buy cloths on the wm - you need higher prestigue..

Build your own cloths and fabric factories early in the game before your pops devolve...

The first 5 factories I build are(or make sure i already have):

lumber mill
fabric
cloths
furniture
paper(this one is hard cuz i think it needs 10 machine parts)

It's still a playbreaker for most not-that-prestigious nations. I suggest you download some of the economy modifications for 1.02 that try to address this and similar issues.

Regular clothes often prove to be THE most difficult goods to buy. In one game I had no problems to buy Machine parts (high prestige) but I never managed to buy regular clothes. Pretty silly but this is hopefully going to be changed in 1,03 :)

This may be a silly question, but is there any reason to think that the clothes factory/factories you build actually affects their availability on the WM? In other words, does the game calculate availability according to some formula or does it actually add up the production of all the RGO's and factories to determine their price and availability?
The mysterious workings of the WM and its unresponsiveness to what are evident cases of scarcity are for me the weakest links in what is otherwise a really good game.

In my game as Oman (I did a little cheating and edited myself into a civilized nation), I sat for almost thirty years (until about ~1870) with NO regular clothes. Since I had no clothes, I could have no craftsmen. Since I had no Craftsmen, I had no way of making clothes.

FINALLY, I was able to buy regular clothes. I converted one pop, and found that I didn't have enough regular furniture. I have over 200 prestige (rank maybe 11 in prestige, maybe 15 overall).

It is now 1890, and no regular furniture.

PS: No LUMBER, either, so I can't build railroads. It's irritating, since I'm exporting wood.

I guess you have to cheat again and add some machine parts as well.

What exactly does regular clothes represent in the game?

In real life it wasn't necessary to have industries (in the sense of Industrial Revolution Industries) to make clothes. If it was like that everyone before teh Industrial Revolution would have lived naked their whole lifes.

The same can be said about regular furniture.

You could make the same comment about the entire industrial section of the game. It's all abstractions intended to place some vestiege of real-life restrictions on industrialization and thus slowing down income.

Production in Victoria does not represent the small-scale pre-industrial cottage industry, but rather it represents production on the large-scale factory level.

I don't believe the point was my prestige level (not too bad anyway: 200+ resulting in the 18th as average raking).
For sure even the second/third prestige ranking nation wasn't able to get any Regular Clothes unit from the WM, due to the fact that only 1 unit was stockpiled everytime.

I understand that WM and goods availability hast to be tuned up in 1.03, otherwise Victoria will remain rather unplayable as an independent nation.

I think the lack of regular clothes is Paradox's way of protesting clothed-Swedish-girls. Their dream come true, a world with no clothes for all those Swedish girls.

Sad that so few Swedish girls (not many playing this game I presume) will get their important message :D

you dont need an economic mod. just go into db/economy folder and click on all those little .txt files... get the one that has pop needs and lower all their clothing needs from 2 to 1 or 0.5 (the economic mods mostly lower it to 0.5, but I find it much more fun to lower it to 1)

then go to the factory folder and make it easier for any nation to build clothing factories.... lower the cost to build.

bamo

I just make my own mods now. The others are a little too far away from what paradox intended. The game just needs a few little tweaks in the economy department, not an entire modification.
